Runners travel to Seattle Oregon women s cross country gets a final tuneup for its National Collegiate Athletic Association Region 8 Championship when it travels to the Washington Invita tional in Seattle Saturday. Following an easy Oregon Track Club Invitational win and a week layoff, Oregon will get back in the run of things against Oregon State, California, University of Washington and Washington State. Oregon coach Tom Heinonen says the Ducks will approach the meet the same way as their previous outings: go out and get a win. “It's a fairly low-key meet," says Heinonen, "but there is no way we could have gone from Oct. 16 to Nov. 12 (Region 8) without run ning a meet." Marty Cooksey of the Oregon Track Club is the only really big name running in the 5,000-meter race. Heinonen is hoping two top Canadian runners will beef up the competition. As far as the team race, the In vitational will be Oregon's first meeting with California this year. The Bears were ranked 14th in Blazers to open season against Walton, Clippers PORTLAND (AP) — Plenty of familiar faces will be there Friday night when Portland opens its Na tional Basketball Association season against San Diego, but they'll look odd sitting on San Diego's side. San Diego's starting lineup will include center James Donaldson and forward Greg Kelser, both of whom were with Seattle last season, and guard Norm Nixon, with Los Angeles last year. Former Portland assistant coach Jim Lynam starts his first year as head coach for San Diego. On the bench will be former Trail Blazers Hank McDowell and Bill Walton. Two other former Trail Blazers, Bob Gross and Michael Harper, were cut Thursday by the Clip pers. And still another, Lionel Hollins, hasn't signed a contract. Walton will not play. To protect his injury-prone feet, the Clippers will not play him on consecutive nights. They're saving him for their home opener Saturday night against Golden State. Portland will start its 1982-83 playoff team, but San Diego decid ed on an almost complete reshuffle. Only five of the 12 Clippers played for San Diego last year, in eluding 1982-83 Rookie of the Year Terry Cummings and starting guard Craig Hodges, also a rookie last year. By contrast, the only Portland new faces are rookies Clyde Drex ler, the 6-7 forward from Houston and Tom Piotrowski, a 7-1 reserve center from LaSalle. Correction The Emerald sports magazine — Sidelines — was in error Wednesday when it reported that Athletic Director Rick Bay had announced that general admission prices would be sold at reserve seat prices. Actually, all seats at Autzen Stadium are reserved, and the athletic department sells tickets at general ad mission prices only if a low attendance is predicted. pre-season polls. Although Heinonen expects a win, Oregon will be making the trip without Lisa Martin and Lisa Johnson. Martin has been ill all week and Johnson will be sidelin ed with a knee injury that has hampered her running all season. "Lisa (Martin) has been ill so we are leaving her home to train," says Heinonen. "Right now she needs more training than racing." Heinonen will use the meet to decide on seven runners for the Region 8 meet at Lane Community College. He says there are eight people vying for the four spots behind Kathy Hayes, Martin and Kim Roth. In addition to Johnson, the eight include freshmen Kim Ryan and Deanna Schielder, sophomore Cretchen Nelson, freshman Birgit Peterson, Claudette Croenendaal, Sandi Leavitt and Brenda Bushnell. “The meet will give these peo ple a chance to sort themselves out for those top seven spots," says Heinonen. "It will be a chance to see the progress they've made in two weeks, because we need to evaluate some people again."
