From Associated Press reports
Newscaster
dies in crash
NEW YORK — Jessica Savitch
died in an automobile accident
Monday at the age of 35, still in
pursuit of the "big things" in net
work TV. Killed along with her was
New York Post executive Martin
Fischbein, 34.
She was a success by almost any
standard of the business. A net
work executive called her "a
television natural," and only a
year ago, viewers ranked her just
behind three anchormen — Dan
Rather of CBS, Roger Mudd of
NBC and Frank Reynolds of ABC
— when asked, "How much con
fidence do you have in his, or her,
reporting?"
"The problem is," Savitch said
in an interview with TV Guide
published in 1979, "whenever you
think of succeeding, you think
you will be happy. You think hap
piness will be written on the
ticket.' It's not. Success does not
have to bring happiness. Success
brings success I think I succeed
ed because so many people told
me I couldn't."
At the height of her career, she
substituted for John Chancellor
and David Brinkley on the "NBC
Nightly News" and anchored the
Saturday edition of the program.
She was favored by many to
become the first woman to anchor
a network evening newscast on
her own.
As recently as August, Savitch
lost her weekend job to Connie
Chung, who was hired away from
the CBS station in Los Angeles,
KNXT. Savitch was assigned the
twice-a-night "NBC News Digest"
report, with a promise that she
would take over the Sunday
"Nightly News" after the first of
the year.
Hatfield calls
for UN force
A United Nations force should
replace the multi-national
peacekeeping force in Lebanon,
Sen. Mark Hatfield, R-Ore., said
Monday.
"I will strongly recommend to
the president that he seek to per
suade the other members of the
multi-national force to join us in
withdrawing all troops immediate
ly," Hatfield said.
"I have believed from the begin
ning that a show of force as our
main tool of foreign policy would
dilute our diplomacy and lessen
the potential effectiveness of our
military," Hatfield said in the
prepared statement.
Hatfield was one of three
Republicans in the Senate to vote
against the War Powers Act
measure allowing the Marines to
stay in Lebanon for 18 months.
He said only the United Nations
can function in an effective
peacekeeping role since it is a
more appropriate mechanism to
address the problem.
"Lebanon remains a tripwire
which threatens to plunge the en
tire globe into war," he said.
"The deep loss experienced by
this nation and the families of
those American personnel who
were struck down while serving
the cause of peace is profound,"
Hatfield said.
"They risked their life for a bet
ter world but their tragic murder
at the hands of terrorists
behooves us to seek to avoid a
senseless repetition," he added.
Soviets plan
East bases
MOSCOW — The Soviet Union,
in its strongest response yet to the
planned deployment of U.S.
missiles in Western Europe, said
Monday it is readying its own new
missile bases in East Germany and
Czechoslovakia.
Western military analysts
believe the Sov et armed forces
already have short-range bat
tlefield nuclear missiles stationed
on the soil of their Warsaw Pact
allies. But Monday's announce
ment was the first public
acknowledgement by the Kremlin
that it was even planning a
nuclear role for Eastern Europe.
"Preparatory work is being
started on the territory of (East
Germany and Czechoslovakia) for
deployment of missile complexes
of operational-tactical designa
tion," the official Tass news agen
cy quoted the Soviet Defense
Ministry as announcing.
It said the preparations were
"one of the planned response
measures in case the American
missiles are sited in Europe."
The plan was formulated in
agreement with East Germany and
Czechoslovakia, the ministry
said.The announce ment came as
Czechoslovak leader Gustav
Husak met in Prague with East
German leader Eric h Honecker.
The NATO allies are scheduled
to begin installing 572 new U.S.
medium-range Pershing 2 and
cruise missiles in five Western
European nations in December.
Western leaders say these missiles
will counter more than 200 Soviet
SS-20 triple-warhead missiles sta
tioned in Russia and targeted on
Western Europe.
Western diplomats in Moscow
described Monday's Soviet an
nouncement as a further step in a
Kremlin propaganda campaign
aimed at convincing the West
European public and govern
ments to reject the U.S. missiles.
The Soviets are believed to
already have SS-21 and SS-22
nuclear-tipped rockets in Eastern
Europe — with ranges of 70 miles
and 500 miles, respectively.
Western analysts have said they
believe the Soviets will add the
SS-22 and the 300-mile-range SS-23
to SS-21 s already positioned in
East Germany.
Bigfoot seen
in Oregon
GRANTS PASS - A Nevada
motorcyclist appeared shaken but
sane when he reported seeing an
apelike creature resembling
Bigfoot on the freeway, state
police said Monday.
Paul Claywell of Las Vegas, Nev.,
pulled off Interstate 5 on Sunday
morning, told state police he saw
a 7-foot hairy creature run on two
legs off the four-lane highway,
then continued on his way, state
police dispatcher Kathy Wooton
said.
“The officer's comment was,
'The fellow (who reported the inci
dent) was obviously very shook
and seemed quite sane when he
came in,'" Wooton added.
“He came in and advised he was
northbound on Interstate 5 and
between the two Grants Pass ex
its.. operating his motorcycle
slow, in the rain," Wooton read
from the state police log.
“He stated that his headlight hit
an animal which was standing
upright on its hind legs. It turned
and looked at him as he approach
ed it, then turned and ran off the
road, still upright.
Bigfoot is the popular name for
a large apelike creature, also
known by the Indian name Sas
quatch, which supposedly roams
through isolated forests in the
Northwest.
“He stated that he knew he was
tired, but he knew for sure it
wasn't a bear because bears usual
ly don't run upright. Claywell
stated the animal stood about 7 to
8 feet tall," Wooton said.
Off the freeway, there is a large
statue of a caveman at the north
entrance to Grants Pass. But
Wooton said it was unlikely
Claywell mistook the statue for
Bigfoot.
"That wouldn't have run across
the road in front of him,” she said.
