Oregon's Dan Ralph pursues Washington's fleet-footed Sterling Hinds during Washington's 32-3
win which dropped the Ducks to 3-4 and 2-1 in Pac-10. Hinds ran over, around and through the
Ducks for 131 yards on 25 carries. And Oregon, like Ralph above, was often a step slow or a second
late.
Huskies dawepile Oregon
By Doug Levy
Of the Emerald
With an Autzen Stadium record
44,303 fans looking on Saturday,
Oregon's football team had its
Rose Bowl bubble burst by a
prepared and poised University of
Washington team.
The Huskies, 14th-ranked and
6-1 on the season, ran their Pac-10
record to 3-0 with a 32-3 clubbing
of Oregon, now 3-4 and 2-1 in
league.
The Ducks watched their runn
ing game evaporate into the arms
of Washington lineman Ron
Holmes, who had seven tackles
and two quarterback sacks.
Oregon's rushing non-attack
generated minus two yards, and
the passing game fared little bet
ter. Mike Jorgensen, harassed by
Washington blitzes, was 6 for 20
for 105 yards and three
interceptions.
Oregon's one shining moment
came in the third quarter when a
45-yard Jorgensen to Barnes pass
set up Paul Schwabe's 30-yard
field goal. Earlier, Schwabe had
missed a 49-yard try after Barnes
returned a punt 27 yards to the
Washington 35.
Meanwhile, Steve Pelluer pass
ed for three touchdowns and
freshman Jeff Jaeger kicked four
field goals to thrash any Duck
hopes.
"They kicked our butts up one
side of the field and down the
other," said Oregon coach Rich
Brooks.
It didn't help the Ducks any to
have right guard Gary Zimmer
man and tackle Greg Schwab on
the sidelines. Without them,
Oregon's running game was a
farce.
"There's no question having
Gary Zimmerman out hurt," said
Washington coach Don James,
who saw his team take up the
Rose Bowl reins. "A guy like that
helps the other players on the
team."

In spite of a lack of offense,
Oregon was still within striking
distance of UW, trailing only 12-0
at halftime. The Ducks' defense
stopped Washington drives at the
35, 12 and 11 yard lines, forcing a
punt and two Jaeger three
pointers.
"I thought we played pretty
well," said Duck defensive end
Steve Baack. "How many field
goals did they have? You know, I
don't want to blame the offense —
they had injuries, but..."
"Man, those guys are physical,"
said Washington’s Sterling Hinds,
who found enough unphysical
spots to romp for 131 yards on 25
carries.
Ultimately, though, it wasn't
Hinds, but Pelluer who did the
Ducks in. Three minutes into the
third quarter, the senior signal
caller attempted to pass, stepped
away from an oncoming Dan
Ralph, and ran 61 yards to make
the score 19-0.
After the Pelluer run, a packed
Autzen could've been the rehear
sal site for an E.F. Hutton commer
cial. Pelluer, never known for
blazing speed, went untouched
except for a diving tackle attempt
by Wendell Cason.
"You hate to see a quarterback
run for a first down, let alone a
touchdown," said Baack, shaking
his head. "I’ll take responsibility
for that one," said Ralph. "That
pretty well broke our backs," said
Brooks.
In the HusVy locker room,
Hinds joked that he "didn't know
he (Pelluer) was that fast" and
James mused that "he'll be our
starting tailback Monday."
Oregon tound nothing funny
about the play. "Yeah, that hurt us
bad," said hard-hitting safety Dan
Wilken. "We missed a lot of
tackles too — / missed a lot of
tackles."
To a man, the Ducks insisted the
loss would be scratched from
their minds.
"Hey, if anybody thinks we're
going to give up, they're wrong,"
said Wilken. "This team isn't go
ing to give up."
