Netters split matches
By Brent Paz
Of the Emerald
The Oregon volleyball team split two NorPac
Conference matches at McArthur Court this
weekend, getting a needed win against Fresno State
Friday night before losing to second-ranked Universi
ty of Pacific Saturday.
Oregon, 15-12 for the season and 1-2 in league,
beat FSU in three straight games, 17-15, 15-6, 16-14,
but lost to Pacific 15-8, 15-8, 15-3.
Oregon coach Chris Voelz had called the Fresno
State match a "must win" for the Ducks, and her
team came through with a victory despite some
scrappy play by the Bulldogs, now 5-8 and 0-3 in
NorPac.
The first game was a close contest, as both teams
were knotted at 14. Then Oregon's All-American can
didate, Sue Harbour took control.
Harbour connected on a kill, a block ace and a tip
to give the Ducks a 16-15 advantage, and Cathy Hill
gave Oregon a 17-15 win with a game-ending kill.
In the next game, Oregon had very little trouble
with FSU. The first-game loss seemed to leave the
Bulldogs exhausted. The Ducks built a 12-5 lead
behind seven straight points and never looked back.
Harbour and Hill were dominant, combining for six
kills and two blocks on serves.
Game three looked very much like game two.
Oregon held a 12-5 advantage and seemed in com
plete control, but FSU roared back from the deficit
thanks to the inspired play of setter Ruth Lawanson.
The Bulldogs scored nine straight points and led
14- 12. That woke up the Ducks, who went ahead
15- 14 on consecutive service aces by Lisa Gemoya.
Heidi Eakin and Cynthia Shepherd finished things up
with a block at the net to give Oregon the game and
the match.
"We kept our intensity against Fresno State,"
said freshman Eakin. "We got down at times, but we
are working together. We want to get in the top
four."
Oregon was no match for Pacific Saturday night.
The second-ranked Tigers were in complete control
after a lethargic beginning and won the match in
three straight games.
The Ducks suprised the heavily favored Tigers in
the first game, marching out to an 8-4 lead. However,

Oregon's Lisa Gemoya (foreground) and Sue
Harbour could block few Pacific kills in a 15-8,
15-8, 15-3 loss Saturday.
Pacific regrouped to score the game's next 11 points,
five straight in one stretch, for a 15-8 win.
'We missed a lot of opportunities and openings
tonight/' Oregon caoch Chris Voelz said of the
Pacific defeat. "We were going for the kills, but they
just got underneath it (the ball)."
Pacific coach Dr, Taras Liskevych was impressed
with Oregon's showing.
"They were really fired up to play us," he said.
