It rolls off thousands of tongues like honey from a hive, thick and sweet, like Lew Barnes runs his pass routes. It starts when he touches the ball, or even before, when he waits for a punt. And the way Barnes has been collecting yardage, the crowd's chants of "Leeeewwwww” are well directed — Barnes has gained 28 percent of Oregon’s yardage this year, if returns are included in the total. In fact, fans may start calling the man “Sweet Lew” if his stock with the Pac-10 statistics office continues ris ing. After Barnes' performance Saturday at home against California, the Oregon junior moved ahead of Oregon State's Bryce Oglesby into second in the league in all-purpose yar dage. Against the Bears, “Sweet Lew” had 145 all-purpose yards — 67 yards in receptions, 41 yards rushing, 22 yards in kickoff returns and 15 yards in punt returns. For the year, Barnes has 619 all-purpose yards, or 123.8 yards per game. That puts him behind only Darryl Clack of Arizona State, who is averaging 155.0 yards per game. Barnes was only 0.3 yards ahead of Cal’s Dwight Garner entering Saturday's game, but a swarm ing Duck defense held Garner to 99 yards in all-purpose yardage. Barnes moved ahead of Cal’s Andy Bark into seventh in the conference in receiving yardage (360 yards) and trails only Emile Harry of Stanford in yards per reception (26.2 vs. 24.0). And his ability to make the big play br ings an element to Oregon’s of fense that has been missing since world-class sprinter Don Coleman graduated in 1979. You have to go back 23 games to find a touchdown reception longer than any of Barnes’ three touchdown receptions this year of 48, 53 and 67 yards. On Sept. 19, 1981 Reggie Brown hooked up with Kevin Lusk on a 52-yard touchdown reception. o RIM deadlines: The entry deadline for the fall cross coun try run is Monday; the run will be held next Wednesday. QUOTES, ANECDOTES: Oregon’s offense returned from a two-year layoff last Satur day with a vengeance that brought back memories of the Reggies — Ogburn and Brown — and the explosive Duck of fense that they powered in the fall of 1980. That was the year Oregon went 6-3-2, beat UCLA and Washington, and tied USC. Saturday’s performance against California at Autzen Stadium (444 yards) was Oregon’s big gest total offensive output since the 1980 season finale against Arizona State in Tempe, 27 games ago.
