Library changes user policy
By David Steinmetz
Of the Emerald
Students can expect several changes at the
University Library this fall, foremost being a new
circulation policy, says Pat Silvernail, assistant
librarian.
All that is needed to charge library material now
is a student body card with a validation sticker, in
stead of requiring a fee card. The University is
replacing fee cards with stickers this year.
However, graduate students must prove their
status with a certificate of paid tuition if they wish
to take advantage of the six month borrowing
period they are now allowed. All undergraduates
will continue to have a two week borrowing
period.
Silvernail says there were several reasons the
new circulation policy was devised.
Policies needed to be more consistent
throughout the University Library system, and a
clear, consistent policy had to be written up as a
first step to making the circulation process
automated.
The policy will not attect the number ot statt
members needed at the library, although some
retraining has been necessary, Silvernail says.
There is one rule that hasn't changed,
however.
Most periodicals continue to be non
circulating, although Science library periodicals
may be charged out for short periods of time.
Another change is more pages for students to
read. An increased budget for the University
Library this year has allowed the library to buy
more books, but there is still a need for more
equipment — like shelves to put the books on.
Another point Silvernail would like to drive in
to students is to remember that they are responsi
ble for material charged to their name, even if
they loan it to a friend.
"Never lend a book to a friend if it is charged
to your name," she says.
