Autzen hook-up aids constipated sewer line Whether or not they realized it, spectators at the Oregon-Pacific home football game Sept. 3 could sit a little softer in their seats, due to the successful efforts of workers who installed a new sewage system at Autzen Stadium. For two weeks prior to the game, employees from Station Construction, Inc., of Eugene, labored in and around the stadium in order to connect the existing sewage system with the city's main sewer line. And accor ding to Cliff Flacey, the physical plant engineer who designed the project, the change came none too soon. "Previously, Autzen Stadium had septic tanks and leach tields," he says of the old sewage system. "It wasn't really adequate and during sports events you have a lot of sewage flow." In addition, Flacey says the pro ject was necessary because the health department required that the year-old executive club be connected to the city sewer system. This summer, the city tern porarily stalled Flacey's plans when it announced that the new main sewer line cannot accept solids until the spring of 1984. Thus, the septic tanks were retain ed to "intercept solids,” accor ding to the University report to the State Board of Higher Education. Workers meanwhile removed the leach tanks, which act as a filtering system. "They laid 1,200 feet of eight inch sewer lines," he adds, prais ing the $53,580 project for its efficiency. "The contractor did a heck of a job and got it in shape for the first game," Flacey says. Next summer, Flacey hopes the stadium will be entirely con nected to the Eugene sewage line. He adds that workers will pro bably be more prepared for what lies under the surface the second time around. "We really didn’t know what was down there when we started. We had a pretty good idea, but we didn't know for sure." Ballroom bills toga party as world's 'largest ever' Grab your roommate's sheets, yank some ivy from a hallowed hall and twist on over to the EMU Ballroom Friday night for the world's largest — yes, largest — toga party ever. Playing at the historical bash will be the one and only Kingsmen, who rose to fame 20 years ago with the classic rock hit, "Louie, Louie," which has sold over 13.5 million copies and is the fifth all-time best sell ing rock single. Some critics have hailed the group as the "greatest party band of all time." The party kicks off a national tour by the Kingsmen, who hope to re release Richard Berry's "Louie, Louie," considered one of the top party tunes ever. On hand will be national and local newspaper and television reporters to record the event. The Kingsmen were in Eugene just one month ago filming a toga video for funky dance-music television station MTV. Toga parties were staged at several fraternities, including the now famous "Animal House" on 11th Avenue, where the late John "Bluto" Belushi and his barbarian frat brothers starred in the movie of the same title. MTV ex pects to air the toga special early this month. Tickets are available at the EMU Main Desk and Earth River Records for $5 in advance and $6 on toga day. -\ VOLVO Owners Alpinelr^rt / /Service \ \ Specialists in Voivo service We offer a preventive mai ntenance/safety inspection for FREE 12th & Main, Sptd. • 726-1808 Quality Copies ‘Binding ‘Thesis •Lamination ‘Reduction •Enlargement ‘Self-Service Copies •Resumes ‘Self-Service Word Processing 344 7894 Own your own phone & never pay rent again!
