ASUO holds first public meeting The new ASUO government held its first public staff meeting of the term Tuesday night in the Forum Room before a sparse crowd. Foremost on the agenda were the upcoming student gover nance issue and a proposed change in a city parking ordinance that would affect all parking in the west University area. ASUO member Lori Lieberman, Vice-Chair of the Student Univer sity Affairs Board, spoke to the governance issue. She outlined SUAB's strategies for maintaining continuity in the lobbying of facul ty members. Those strategies include speak ing to professors in pairs, pointing out the students' record on past votes and anticipating and discussing probable counter arguments. ASUO’s staff members overwhelmingly agreed to cooperate with and participate in SUAB's efforts. An amendment currently being considered would reduce student representation in the Senate from 18 members to two. SUAB members are seeking to maintain their 18 member status or to affect some compromise that would maintain the current 2 to 1 ratio of 18 students and 36 faculty members. Regarding the parking or dinance, the ASUO decided to send spokespeople to a Eugene Council meeting to oppose the possible ordinance change. At issue is the proposed change to a maximum of two hours park ing on some streets bordering the west side of the University. Cur rently parking is allowed all day on many streets. The change would require peo ple not living in the area to pur chase a parking permit while local households would be granted one free permit each but would have to buy additional permits. Many University students would be affected; commuters, students with more than one vehicle and fraternity and sorority houses in the area with several vehicles. In the only money-related deci sion of the night, the ASUO mov ed to donate $50 to the New Stu dent Host Program to help pro mote its activity fair. That brings to $315 the total which the new government has donated, according to Assistant Coordinator of University Affairs Barbara McCarthy. Members also considered ideas tor better utilizing the air time that is accessible to ASUO on public access television. Matters discussed but not decided were; formulating a workable method for students to have access to Pres. Olum, recom mending students for a Who's Who and choosing a member for the residency committee.
