Say 'bye to Duffy's, hello to Guido's
The closing of Duffy's, a popular tavern and
gathering place for students since 1972, came as a
surprise to the many people who had frequented
the establishment over the years.
The tavern, which was located on the corner of
13th Avenue and Alder Street, mysteriously
closed its doors to the public last May.
The closure seemed abrupt. Local bands had
performed there right up until the tavern closed.
Over the summer the only hint that the brick
building without any windows had been a tavern
open for business was the "No Minors" sign still
pasted on the door.
"This isn't unusual. We've seen a lot of places
go under," says Jim Stevens, regional supervisor
for the enforcement and licensing division of the
Oregon Liquor Control Commission.
Money was probably the main reason for the
tavern's closing. Former co-operators of Duffy's,
Gary McMahan and Barry Ernes of Grants Pass,
apparently did not have enough of it to stay in
business.
The lease and payments on the equipment used
in the business totaled close to $4,000 a month,
according to OLCC records. The records also
show that the owner of the business site
repossessed the property.
"There was a good wad of money that went
out," says Stevens, "Apparently the people
(McMahan and Ernes) didn't make their payments.
Essentially they just walked out."
Students may not have had as much money to
spend on entertainment the last few years
because of the recession, which may have
affected the tavern's business somewhat, Stevens
adds.
"The Side” and "Lemon O" preceded Duffy's as
businesses at the same site. Now "Guido's” will
succeed the tavern as the business on the corner.
Co-operator Don Scarpelli says Guido's will
serve pizza and deli items while also serving beer
and wine. Skylights are planned to be put in to
lighten the atmosphere of the inside of the
building. After 9 p.m., there will be dancing to
taped music for those over 21.

Under construction, the old Duffy's is becoming
the new Guido's.
