    Wilson honored
Oregon linebacker Lerry
Wilson, who made 20 tackles to
help the Ducks upset Houston
15-14 last Saturday, was named
Pac-10 Conference defensive
player of the week for his efforts.
Wilson was originally credited
with 22 tackles, but Oregon
coaches said he had 20 after
watching game films. Ten of
Wilson's tackles were unassisted.
The 6-3, 225-pound sophomore
from Irrigon is quickly gaining a
reputation as an open-field
tackier. As a freshman, 27 of his 33
tackles were unassisted.
Although he saw only limited ac
tion as a freshman, Wilson also
managed to make one intercep
tion, a theft in the opening
minutes against Notre Dame.
This year, Oregon coach Rich
Brooks is looking to Wilson as a
San Diego pins
LA with losses
SAN DIEGO (AP) - Andy
Hawkins scattered seven hits in
eight 2-3 innings and Terry Ken
nedy drilled a solo homer to giver
the San Diego Padres a 4-1 victory
over Los Angeles Thursday night,
stalling the Dodgers’ National
League West pennant bid with a
sweep of a double header.
The Dodgers' magic number to
win the West remained at one
with three games remaining. They
have a three-game lead over the
second-place Atlanta Braves, who
kept their hopes alive with a 5-4
victory over the Houston Astros.
The Padres won the opener 7-1
with a six-run eighth inning.
Hawkins, a 23-year-old right
hander, called up to the majors
earlier this month, struck out a
caseer high 10 and walked four
while giving up the Dodgers' only
run on a two-out homer in the
ninth by lose Morales. Hawkins,
5-7, needed last-out relief help
from Luis DeLeone, who posted
his 13th save.
Kennedy's 17th homer of the
year, a 400-foot blast into the right
center field bleachers, came in the
fourth inning. San Diego padded
its lead in the sixth, scoring three
times off Dodger starter Alejandro
Pena, 12-9.
In the opener, Tony Gwynn's
two-out RBI single and Kevin
McReynolds' two-run hit keyed a
sixth-run eighth for the Padres.
The victory went to Sid Monge,
9-3.
Oakland rookie
throws no-hitter
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Mike
Warren of the Oakland A's
became the first rookie to pitch a
no-hitter irf more than a decade
Thursday night by blanking the
Chicago White Sox 3-0.
The 22-year-old right-hander
walked three and struck out five
in breezing through the Chicago
lineup to pitch the second no
hitter in the major leagues this
week. Bob Forsch of the St. Louis
Cardinals no-hit Montreal 3-0 on
Monday.
The closest the White Sox came
to a hit was in the eighth inning
when pinch-hitter Mike Squires
belted a long drive that right
fielder Mike Davis, who had just
entered the game as a defensive
replacement, caught at the wall
near the 372-foot mark for the
final out of the inning.
Warren, 5-3, did not allow a bat
ter to reach second base and fac
ed 29 batters, two over the
minimum. In the third, he walked
Scott Fletcher, who was then
thrown out stealing. Tom Paciorek
drew another walk in the fifth.
Warren, who made his major
league debut on June 12 against
Chicago and threw a wild pitch to
Greg Luzinski on his first pitch in
the big leagues, had a 4.76 earned
run average going into the game.
main cog in his 4-3 defense.
That is quite a boost for the
sophomore, who returned to
Oregon last fall after leaving camp
for personal reasons a year earlier.
While Wilson was gaining
defensive player of the week
honors, Arizona State University's
Darryl Clack was busy wrapping
up an offensive player of the week
award.
Clack rushed 22 times for 221
yards and scored three
touchdowns to lead the Sun
Devils to a 44-14 rout of Wichita
State University. j
