The current class of about 475 students and 23 full-time faculty will be celebrating the school's centennial with a symposium and a yearbook. Law school set to celebrate tune centennial anniversary By Leslie Knight Ot the Emerald Attending law school is a lot like going back to high school, according to Sharon Cordon, law school assistant dean. Few people would think to compare the rigors of an intense program such as law school to high school, but Cordon makes the comparison social ly — not academically. "First-year students have all their classes together, they have lockers, everyone talks about everyone else all the time," she says. This social atmosphere and closeness helps make the pro gram’s intensity more bearable, and friendships formed during the program often last a lifetime, Gordon says. Students are seated alphabetically and separated into two groups — A and B "I went to law school in 1973, and I'm still a section A'er," Gordon says. "Some of my best friends in the world are still those whose names start with the letter G." The law school is not very visible to the rest of the campus and is different in some ways from other University programs. Law school students rarely take classes in other areas, although they may. Because the law school is on the early semester program, school starts and finishes a month earlier. Gordon says the quarter system wouldn't work for the law school and thinks the entire University should adopt the semester system. "The advantages of learning a third fewer classes in-depth far outweighs the disadvantages" she says. The courses are graded somewhat differently. The students "are held strictly accountable for what they're supposed to know. They are being prepared to know the law and to work well under stress," Gordon says. In many cases, this means the final exam counts for 100 percent of the grade. Gordon emphasizes that class participation is im portant but "the only reward is knowing that you can do it — which is a pretty substantial reward." The law school this year is celebrating its centennial, which should increase its visibility. When the law school was founded on June 18, 1884, it had a class of seven. The law school cur rently has more than 475 students and 23 full-time fatuity. ■ A three-part symposium on American legal history to be held on campus in February will in clude representatives from Harvard and Stanford universities, and the history of the law school will be documented for the first time in a centennial yearbook. Gordon has compiled an alumni catalog and says 75 percent of the 2,500 alumni still are in Oregon. Alumni are involved in every aspect of law from private practice to the judiciary to work ing in government. But Gordon says law school provides such a broad background that law students can be employed anywhere. Law students learn to analyze problems and identify solutions, which makes them a commodity, she says. "Businesses love to have lawyers." Gordon says. "They really help get things done." wBackstage Dance wear & Theatrical Warm ups Gymnastic Wear Theatrical Makeup Leotards Tights Dance Shoes (expertly Fit) BEAT THE HIGH COST OF MUSIC ho deposit required with membership Free album upon joining $1.10 per rental Perfect Quality Guaranteed
