Moving in takes connections Fees abound for telephone, water By Sandy Johnstone Of the tntfrild You're all moved in and just set tling down to rest when suddenly you realize there was more to moving than just putting stuff away — phone, water, electric, mail and other services still have to be connected. Getting utilities connected is fairly simple — most services are just a phone call away. But first, you have to get the phone. The difficult part of getting a phone is coming up with the $80 minimum deposit required by Pacific Northwest Bell for those without previous credit record. Students can have their parents or a friend with credit co-sign for the phone, if the person has good credit with the phone company. Private lines have a basic fee of $13.05 per month. For those who need to rent a phone, the fee ranges from $1.17 per month to $1.71 per month, depending on the model. For those who want to avoid the monthly charge, phones can also be purchased from the phone company or from various depart ment stores. It will take a couple of days to get service set up after the order, plus the co-signed form or deposits, is placed. The basic hookup charge is $29, with extra charges of $27 for the first 15 minutes and $9.75 for each addi tional 15 minutes if installation is necessary. Eugene Water and Electric Board provides electricity, sewer and water service to the area. Monthly utility bills include a $5 customer charge for fixed costs and is 2.614 per kilowatt hour. City sewer costs, which appear on the EWEB bill, are $10.50 per apartment or house. Basic water charges are 52.9 cents per 1,000 gallons and most people average about 9,000 gallons per month, according to Garry Kunkle, rate manager. But these rates are liable to change in the next couple weeks, Kunkle says. The Bonneville Power Administration is expected Craphu by Shawn Bird to request an increase and when that increase is made public, EWEB will have a better idea of how much to increase its rates, says Kunkle. Although EWEB buys about 70 percent to 80 percent of its power from the BPA, the rate increase probably will not be as large as the total increase from the BPA, says Kunkle. For those with gas heat, North west Natural Gas Co. charges $2.50 per month basic fee plus about 67 cents per therm. A therm is the standard unit of gas energy. The average residential customer uses about 700 therms per year, mostly from November to April, averaging about $40 per month. Many apartment complexes are served centrally and so tenants don't have to worry about connec tion or installation. Those who use oil to heat residences should measure how much oil is left and call an oil com pany if it is low. Some companies will offer a full service and will monitor oil themselves for the houses they serve. Oil rates at Marshall's Oil and Insulation are about $1.26 per gallon for stove oil and $1.14 per gallon for diesel oil for the first 100 gallons, with prices decreas ing the more oil is purchased. At least 100 gallons must be purchas ed in order to have the oil delivered. Garbage rates are set by the city, with A-1 Garbage Service Co. serv ing most of the University area. Rates are about $6 per can and the day it is picked up is determined according to the address. Billing is ^ done for two months — for the month before and the month after. Apartment dwellers who want to receive mail must be sure to put their names on their mailboxes or their mail will not be delivered. Names are useful but not required for houses. Cable service is available in most of the Eugene/Springfield area. The basic charge is $7.95, with specialty channels added for additional costs. There is about a two week wait for service to be connected. For readers, the Register-Guard is delivered daily each morning for $6 per month. Those living in Springfield may receive the Springfield News for $1.75 per month.
