For a mere $50 a month a furniture rental store will lavishly fur
nish your humble cottage.
Renting your furniture
may be the better buy
By Frank Shaw

Moving in to a new place can be a traumatic experience - especially
if it's unfurnished. Let's face it, not many students can afford to run to
Levitz Furniture and buy a complete set of new furniture.
But there are cheaper ways.
One of the easiest is to rent furniture from Grantree.
Shelley Pickrell, a showroom representative at Grantree, says they
can completely furnish an apartment for $50 a month. That fee inc udes
a complete living room ^et with a couch and coffee table, a dinette se a
and four chairs and a bedroom set that includes a bed and chest of ■
And one advantage of renting from Grantree is that renters are not
held liable for normal wear-and-tear or accidental damage to the fur
niture. Cigarette burns and beer stains are taken care of, Pickrell says —
which makes Grantree attractive to fraternities.
When a student signs the rental agreement, Grantree agrees to
deliver and pick up the furniture. All they ask is a 30 day notice before
picking up the furniture. .
And another advantage for the student who is looking a few years
down the road is Grantree's rent-to-buy option. All the money paid for
rent is applicable to the eventual purchase of the furniture.
Grantree also allows furniture exchange, which makes things easy
for students who like to change their decor every few weeks.
But if $50 a month seems too steep, break out some form of
transportation and hit the road for the garage sales. Check some shop
pers and keep your eyes peeled for signs. What's not good enough for
someone else might be just what you need to complete your living
room or bedroom. Surprisingly good deals can be found at cheap
prices.
Last not but least are Goodwill stores and others of that ilk. A trip
through a Goodwill store shows lounge chairs for prices ranging frorr
$6 to $15, couches from $12 to $19 and bedframes all at $7. They als>^
have those ancient cabinets like the ones mom and dad used to have for
only $14.
The only problem with Goodwill stores and garage sales is that it s
tough to talk them into delivering it to your new pad. That means you
either have a truck or a friend with a truck. But at the money you save,
it's worth it,
