    Museum
anniversary on Oct. 2 by opening
its fall season with an exhibition
titled Decoding Dragons: Status
Garments of the Ch'ing Dynasty.
The show includes pieces given to
the University by Warner in
memory of her husband Murray
Warner.
Imperial robes, ritual coats and
vests worn by high-ranking Man
chu nobles on ceremonial occa
sions and a uniform worn by an
officer of the imperial guard will
be on display. Also included are
Taoist priests liturgical robes, Han
Chinese bridal wear, and rare ex
amples of garments from rural
areas outside the court. China was
ruled by the Ch'ing or Manchu
dynasty from 1644 to 1910.
The Chinese Show will be in the
museum's lobby and main floor
changing galleries.
There are other exceptional
areas in the museum. While on
the main floor, continue on
through the galleries and into the
outdoor courtyard. In the cour
tyard are beautiful and tranquil
places for meditation and quiet
reflection. Columns line the court
and surround the reflecting pool.
Each column has a unique carving
of Oregon birds or vegetation on
its crown. Contemporary
sculpture line the outer walls —
don't overlook the Indian maiden
and fawn sculpture and the Pan
figures.
To the right of the courtyard is
the photography gallery. A new
display of artistic photography is
put up each month.
The museum's significant col
lection of Pacific Northwest Art is
on display in the Northwest
Gallery.This exhibition also
changes because the museum
owns more works that they have
facilities to display at any one
time.
Also on the main floor is the
Showcase Gallery. Here are
presented the works of contem
porary Oregon artists. At this ren
tal and sales gallery a painting can
be rented for $16 for three
months.
Before leaving the main floor
visit the Rainbow Gift Shop where
a selection of antiques, imported
artifacts and objets d'art are
available for purchase.
Admission to the gallery is free,
though donations are ap
preciated. Financial cuts have
forced the museum to close down
two months in the summer during
the prime time for tourists and
visiting scholars from around the
world. The gallery is also closed
Mondays and Tuesdays year
around. Visit the University's art
museum Wednesday through
Sunday, noon until 5 p.m.
