Posh palace gets rock hard The ultra-modern architecture and posh interior of the Hult Center for the Performing Arts may be deceiv ing — in the past year it has been the scene of some of the best rock'n'roll to come to Eugene. Various concert promoters, both local and from Portland and Washington, have brought in a year's worth of hard-rock memories. Double Tee Productions of Portland was the first to book rock'n'roll into the Hult's Silva Concert Hall. They brought in Bobby and the Midnights and Jefferson Starship. But then Eugene's Regal Productions staged a slew ot concerts with the likes of Johnny Rivers, the legen dary Chuck Berry (pictured above), also legendary Jerry Lee Lewis and the beyond-legendary — almost mythical — Ray Charles (pictured above). During the summer Regal promoted concerts by The Tubes (lead singer Fee Waybill pictured above) and the recently reformed Animals (Eric Burdon pictured above). Of all those concerts Chuck Berry's probably stands out as the most memorable. Berry did two shows — the first bluesy, the second exuberant and raucous. But The Tubes were the fans' favorite. The non-stop two hour show had everything from "Hey, Sports Fan" to Quay Louis the XIV singing "White Punks on Dope." Photo by Mark Pynes The inimitable Grateful Dead (Jerry Garcia pictured above) were in the Silva Hall Aug. 29, 30 and 31, brought to Eugene by the Springfield Creamery and promoter Forrest Fabian. The "Deadheads" came in droves and by all accounts said their heroes gave three outstanding performances. Another year of Hult rock concerts is about to com mence. The rowdiness of audience and the feared damage to the elegant concert halls have proved to be groundless.
