IF®®. ®IL&Tfs GROUP IMPROVISES COMEDY FROM LIFE Every Friday night on the edge of campus at Shell's, a group of current and former University students are performing some of the hottest new improvisational comedy around Eugene. The group is called For Play, and we all know For Play is Fun. For Play's Comedy is explosive, un sophisticated, laugh-at-life comedy. Their spoofs of popular television programs and their zany ren ditions of everyday situations leave audiences reeling with laughter. For Play also does some very good serious drama. Their dramas usually involve conflicts bet ween two people. The conflicts are real-life con Story by Lisa Siegle Photos by Mark Pynes flicts (sibling rivalry, a seemingly real on-stage argument between two members of the group) that the performers act out with such sensitivity and sincerity that you forget what you're seeing isn't real. Most of the group's nine members have been involved in University Theatre productions. One member co-authored UT's smash hit "The Last Dragon." (See related story on page 6E.) Only one of For Play's members, Katha Feffer, has ever worked in an improvisational group before. Lack of experience hasn't lead to lack of quality, though. There are some rough spots, but for the most part their shows are quick, witty, and lots of fun. For Play keeps things as unstructured as possible. They plan in advance what kind of piece they'd like to do, who's going to do what, and then let the audience decide the details. Letting the audience decide the details of a piece leads to some pretty interesting entertain ment. One night, while spoofing "The People's Court", a male member of the audience was tried for killing a slug. He was found innocent. In For Play's main venue is Sheli's on 13th Avenue, its subject matter is life. another bit, For Play had found two of the missing links in mankind's evolution and the audience determined what the links discovered in modern society. Naturally, sex came first. “Improvisation reflects what's on your mind," says Katha. "Your emotions and attitudes show through in what you do on the stage. If you're running around all over the stage that tells the au dience that you really don't want to do what you're doing. The key to improv is learning to concentrate completely on what you're doing Continued on Page 16E / Precision Hairworks For the BEST haircut you can get at any price. corner of 29 th & Willamette 343-1182 no appointment needed Open Mon.- Sat. $ 6 Take & Bake Pizza 2578 Willamette St. (In Willamette Square) 343-0255 Open: Monday thru Thursday. 12:00 Noon to 8:00 PM Friday and Saturday. 12:00 Noon to 9:00 PM • CLOSED SUNDAY PIZZA Pick Your Favorites SMAI.I. 10" 2.25 2.60 3.05 3.50 3.95 .45 MED 12" 3.25 3.75 4.30 4.85 5.40 .55 LARGE 16" 4.50 5.40 6.05 6.70 7.35 .65 Plain Cheese Plus One Topping Two Toppings Three Toppings Four Toppings Extra Toppings - Toppings Include: Olives, Onions, Green Pepper, Mushrooms.
