Compiled by John Healy Flying Continued from Page 11 Both men reel off the names of the towns they've been to in the last six months to visit alumni — Pendleton, The Dalles, Coos Bay, Astoria, Roseburg, the list goes on and on. In Portland, Mitch Barnhart works fulltime from his office in the city, tapping what Byrne points out is an area that contains half the state's population and half of Oregon's alumni. "I think we've done a pretty good job letting people know who we are,” says Baker. "You have to have some kind of consistency, and we've been out in the marketplace a lot more, just because we've had more people to do it.” And the people seem to be watching and listening to the new campaign. Baker recalls an a brief moment at the Lane County Fair in August as evidence of the new awareness. He was approached by a man who had watch ed one of the television "Quack Attack" commer cials, where someone cuts a string of ducks out of paper. T “He told me he had spent two hours at home trying to cut out the paper ducks," remembers Baker. "He said 'You can't do it like they do in the commercial.' “His wife swore to me that he sat there for two hours cutting out those paper ducks trying to get them to unfold like that. I told him we cut them out and tape them together for the com mercial and he said 'Good, I tried everything.' Right there that tells you a guy is watching it." But he's not the only one who has heard of Oregon — or will hear of Oregon — if Byrne and Baker have their way. “When we first got here, people kept saying The Beavers have been here, the Beavers have been there.' " Baker remembers. "Well, I'll guarantee you one thing, whoever is following us, they're hearing ‘The Ducks have been here,' that's for sure." Quack. By John Healy Photos by Mark Pynes There will be more than football this Saturday when Oregon faces Houston — like a chili cook-off, a Dixieland band in the parking lot, a duck-calling contest, Oregon's new-look marching band at halftime, and more. 1 - R | Classifieds CLASSIFIED ADS CAN BE PLACED AT OOC OfFKIE. 100 EMU UO BOOKSTORE STAMP COUNTER EMU MAIN DESK DEADLINES: Ads must be placed by 1 pm one day prior to public at ion Ads that are to appear in Monday's paper must be in by 1 pm Frtday.
