Polls
Continued from Page 3
to Southern California center
Tony Slaton for top offensive
lineman in the conference. Slaton
polled nine first-place votes to
Zimmerman's seven.
Pick s: 1. Arizona, 179. 2.
Southern California, 170. 3.
Washington, 169. 4. Arizona State,
143. 5. UCLA, 121. 6. Washington
State, 102. 7. California, 84. 8. Stan

•Street and Smith's Official College
Football Yearbook: The most
authoritative of the college foot
ball publications dumps the
Ducks just ahead' of the cellar
bound Beavers in the Pac-10.
"You have to feel a little sorry
for Rich Brooks," begins Street
and Smith's profile of Oregon.
"He got his defense together
■ brilliantly the last half of last
season. The Ducks finished only
2-8-1 (2-6 in the Pac-10) but held
five opponents to ten points or
under, and tied Notre Dame,
13-13. But the offense, was, well,
terrible, scoring more than 13
points only once. Now the offense
looks better — maybe even a lot
better — but only two defensive
starters return."
Street and Smith offers the
Ducks one ray of hope in the
selection of Zimmerman to the
All-West Team at guard.
Picks: 1. Southern California. 2.
Washington. 3. UCLA. 4. Arizona.
5. Arizona State. 6. California. 7.
Washington State. 8. Stanford. 9.
OREGON. 10. Oregon State.
•The Sporting News — College
Football: This weekly sports
newspaper/magazine doesn't give
you a standard ranking of the
Pac-10's teams, but Oregon's
synopsis comes after eight of the
other teams, with the Beavers
following the Ducks.
The Sporting News starts off
well, saying "... things could be
looking up for Duck fans" but
then adds a disclaimer. "Last year,
a tie with Notre Dame and a last
second victory over Oregon State
kept things almost bearable in
Eugene, where expectations have
dropped back to pre-1979 lows."
Later in th article, Sporting
News offers Oregon another glim
mer of hope — "wide receivers
Osborn Thomas and Lew Barnes
will be all-conference candidates
in the new offense" — but then
ends with more gloom —
"Defense has kept Oregon com
petitive the past three seasons,
but the Ducks lost eight
starters.., off the league's sixth
ranked defense."
Picks: 1. Washington. 2. Arizona
State. 3. Arizona. 4. Southern
California. 5. UCLA. 6. California.
7. Washington State. 8. Stanford.
9. OREGON. 10. Oregon State.
•Athlon's Pac Ten Football: The
good news is that Athlon com
pares Oregon coach Rich Brooks
with Woody Hayes, one of the
most successful college coaches
in history. The bad news is that
the Ducks are relegated to the
conference cellar by Athlon.
"Searching for a quick fix for
past woes, Oregon Coach Rich
Brooks intends to open up the of
1 fense with greater emphasis on
the passing game," Athlon says.
"He wants to wing it, as in pass
first, run second. It's a flip-flop in
philosophy akin to Woody Hayes
recruiting Art Schlichter at Ohio
State a few years back."'
Athlon details how Brooks came
to Oregon with "a deep-seated
belief in the option game," but
ended up "embarassed" when
Oregon could only muster eight
touchdowns using the option of
fense last fall. Thus, Brooks has
chosen "not to stay the course.
He's determined his Ducks fly off
in a new direction," says Athlon.
Picks: 1, Southern California 2.
Arizona State. 3. Arizona. 4.
Washington 5. UCLA. 6. Califor
nia. 7. Stanford. 8. Washington
State. 9. Oregon State. 10.
OREGON.
