At the arrival of the Fourth
of July holiday weekend mid
night Friday, will be the
dismissal of all Sheriff’s Patrol
in Lane County.
The sheriff’s office suffered
a severe blow in Tuesday’s
county election, as the law en
forcement “menu" ballot lost
25,738 to 18,910. The sheriff’s
separate measure — which
would have funded prisoner
transport — lost by an even
wider margin, 27,674 to 16,657,
according to the county elec
tions office.
And with the holiday ap
proaching, this defeat will be
felt immediately, says Sheriff
Dave Burks. Patrol will be end
ed by midnight Friday, he
says.
"The greatest impact, of
course, is going to be on the
victims. Those are the ones
that are going to suffer the
most on this whole thing
because there will be victims
who would not have been vic
tims had not our services been
cut.
“There will be people who
will wait longer for help,”
Burks says.
In spite of his disappoint
ment over the defeat, Burks
says he is not surprised by it.
“We knew we had an uphill
battle because, obviously, the
majority of the money was go
ing to law enforcement on the
May 17 ballot which failed
2:1,” he says.
Burks attributes the loss
partly to the fact that the
sheriff's office was on the
ballot with the district at
torney's office and the
juvenile department.
Also "the general feeling
towards government and
bureaucracy” hurt the levy, he
says.
"No one trusts government
anymore" because of "the
almost virtual certainty of
higher taxes by the state. They
whittle away at the property
relief fund year after year,"
Burks says.
Lewis Simmons, assistant
chief for the Juvenile Depart
ment, says confusion largely
caused the voters’ reaction
Tuesday. His department’s
separate ballot lost 27,891 to
16,670.
The voters were confused
because they didn’t know they
had to pass the "A" ballot —
the $2.9 million menu measure
— before any of the other
measures could pass, says
Simmons, who also took the
levy’s defeat without surprise.
