Ramey named housing director
until position filled permanently

Marjory Ramey, assistant University hous
ing director, will become acting director this
summer until the position is filled permanently
next year, Pres. Paul Olum announced at a
press conference Friday.
Ramey replaces Dan Williams, who left the
postion to take over as vice president for ad
ministration on July 1. Ramey will serve as
housing director while helping to select and
train the new director.
“I think it will be great fun and a
challenge,” Ramey said Thursday. "Dan
Williams is leaving things in very good shape
for me.”
Ramey said she will not apply for the per
manent position and plans to return to her
assistant director position after the director
takes over.
The search for a permanent director will
begin in late fall, said Williams.
During the summer, the department will
hire three student assistants to assume
Ramey’s duties in public relations and arrang
ing summer conferences. She will redistribute
the workload among department staff next fall.
“I don’t see any radical changes in the
future for the department. We’ll just continue
to serve the students the best way we can.”
Classes offered
on Pacific Rim
The journalism and business schools,
the economics department and the inter
national studies program will offer new
courses on Pacific Rim studies next year
with a grant from the U S. Department of
Education.
The courses will focus on the relation
ship between the Pacific Northwest and
countries in the Pacific Rim says Prof.
Clarence Thurber, director of the Interna
tional studies program.
Possible courses range from a
business course on international manage
ment and strategy to a journalism course
on reporting Pacific Basin news.
Williams said he has complete confidence
in Ramey’s ability to be “a forceful and creative
interim director of the department.”
Olum also announced overall admissions
for next fall are down 5 percent for the same
period last year, but new student admissions
are up 6.5 percent.
"If this trend continues, we should be at
the same level of new students next year as we
have this year,” he said.
Olum attributed the rising new student
enrollment to increased publicity about the
University's high quality academic programs.
The new admissions standards, approved
by the State Board of Higher Education last
week, won’t decrease enrollment at the Univer
sity, Olum said.
“I think the high school students will be
better trained, and this could help add to our
admissions,” he said.
Olum said he would favor adding a foreign
language requirement to the requirements,
which now include four years of English, three
years of math, three years of social studies, two
years of science and two years of other approv
ed college preparatory courses.
Olum said such a requirement could give
students the option to take one of the years of
foreign language at the University.
ASUO personnel
shuffled in and out
Laurel Singer, ASUO co-coordinator of stu
dent events, resigned from that position to take
a graduate teaching fellow counseling position
with the Crisis Center.
The resignation makes Bill Snyder ASUO
coordinator of student events. The ASUO presi
dent’s office hired Mary Lewis, a co-director of
People and the Oregon Coast, as temporary
assistant director of student events.
Singer will volunteer time during the sum
mer to help the student events’ office get
organized for the 1983-84 school year.
The resignation marks the first personnel
change in the Mary Hotchkiss administration.
Former ASUO Pres. C.J. Balfe's administration
had 10 staff resignations and one dismissal.
