Sixers, Lakers to hunt momentum Thursday PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Even though they're ahead, Philadelphia coach Billy Cunn ingham wants the 76ers to pre tend they trail the Los Angeles Lakers in the National Basket ball Association champion ship series. "Psychologically we won’t be ahead in the series unless we win the second game,” Cunningham said after Tues day’s practice, the first since Sunday’s 113-107 victory in Game 1 at the Spectrum. "And psychologically, the Lakers won’t feel like they’re behind unless they go back to L A. behind 2-0,” he said. “We can’t play like frontrunners yet.” The second game of the best-of-seven final will be played here Thursday night, Bring Out Your Best With Rim ; Thanks! k rmr 0 H -a m rr ’C A T, ^ Special Thanks - As things wind down this Spring, it is a time to thank all those people who contributed to a very successful year for RIM. Lakers coach Pat Riley agreed with Cunningham’s reasoning. “I think both teams realize it's very significant to win Thursday night,” he said. "Philadelphia wants to be in the driver’s seat. They don’t want to go to Los Angeles 1-1. I think it will be one of the best games of the series.” Both teams have injury pro blems to overcome. The 76ers have lost Clemon Johnson, reserve center and power forward, who is hospitalized with a urinary tract infection. Cunningham said Johnson definitely would not play Thursday and was questionable for Game 3. Johnson, who has averaged 4.4 points and 3.9 rebounds during 10 playoff games, is an important ingredient for Philadelphia because he relieves Moses Malone or Julius Erving and his forward running mate Marc Lavaroni. The 6-10 Johnson has the strength and experience to play people such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Cunningham said he would use Earl Cureton, who has played just six minutes in three playoff games, in Johnson’s place. Ironically, Cureton got into the second game of last season’s Lakers-76ers’ title confronta tion because his team was in foul trouble. He played well. The Lakers are concerned about guard Norm Nixon, who scored 26 points Sunday but injured his left shoulder in a second period collision with Andrew Toney. Also, the status of relief forward-center Bob McAdoo is on a day-to-day basis. He has a thigh injury and did not play Sunday. Nixon said he still had pain in the shoulder, but would play. McAdoo gives the Lakers in stant offense and is a top rebounder. Sitton nets Pan Am bid COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Oregon State’s Charlie Sitton was one of 12 players named Tuesday to the United States basketball team to play in the Pan American Games in Venezuela. Sophomore standouts Patrick Ewing of Georgetown and Michael Jordan of North Carolina were among those named to the team. Sitton, a 6-foot-9 junior, led Oregon State in scoring at 18.8 points per game last season. The selection of the squad was announced following the Pan American Basketball Trials the previous five days. The team includes two other sophomores, Chris Mullin of St. John’s and Greg Stokes of Iowa, two freshmen, Mark Price of Georgia Tech and Wayman Tisdale of Oklahoma, five juniors and only one senior, Fred Reynolds of Tesas-EI Paso. The juniors are Sitton, Michael Cage of San Diego State, Jim Master of Kentucky, Sam Perkins of North Carolina and Leon Wood of Cal State Fullerton. Ewing, 7-foot center, helped Georgetown to a 22-11 record last season and led the team in rebounding, 10.2 per game, and scoring, 17.7. He was the Big East Conference defen sive player of the year for the second season after blocking 106 shots. He blocked 119 shots his freshman year. Jack Hartman of Kansas State is the coach for the U S. team. His assistant is Bob Chipman of Washburn. Jordan, a 6-foot-6 forward, averaged 20 points a game last season and was second in the voting for the Wooden Award and as Atlantic Coast Con ference player of the year, both behind Virginia’s Ralph Sampson. Owner plans Celtic sale BOSTON (AP) — Boston Celtics owner Harry Mangurian put his National Basketball Association team up for sale Tuesday, citing strained relations with the owners of the Boston Garden. "I plan on selling the Boston Celtics and the main reason is that I don’t want to be the per son that moves the Celtics out of Boston," Mangurian said at a news conference. “Our rela tionship with the Garden peo ple has literally fallen apart." He said “nothing" would change his mind about his plans to sell the club and add ed "hopefully a new owner could cope with these people, but I can't.” Classic Italian Ice Cream — MARIE CALLENDER’S Happy Hour Daily 4 pm - 6 pm Mon Thru Sat MARIE CALLENDER’S 1300 Valley River Dr. 484-7111 JL-n
