The Infamous interview
Remember Health 250 — brush your teeth, bathe,
don't be afraid to let them know how great you are
By Debbie Howlett
Of ttw Em»r»k)
Sweat rolls off your
forehead, the palms of your
hands feel like a soggy wash
cloth, all you can think about
is whether your going to live
through the next hour.
The receptionist offers you
a seat to wait for the personnel
manager. As you sit down you
accidentally kick the potted
palm next to the end table fill
ed with magazines. A kind of
undefinable horror fills your
mind as the plant teeters back
and forth. You begin to wonder
whether the office has a vac
cuum to clean up the dirt. You
wonder if you should stick
around long enough to find
out.
Interviews are painful. No
sane person wants to sit
through more than a few. But a
job interview is the ideal
chance a prospective
employee has at showing off
for a prospective employer.
But we’re not talking hand
stands here.
Showing off can be the sub
tle way you have of saying
“This ad campaign I did for a
class assignment won first
place in a prestigous national
competition." Or “My resume
was printed before I was
notified that I was selected as
a Rhoades Scholar.”
Commentary
Well for those of you who,
like me, find that you aren’t a
Rhoades Scholar, or didn't win
a national competition in
anything, there are other ways.
Remember Health 250, that
class you went to twice? If you
happened to catch the
hygiene lecture, that advice
might be well used. If you
didn’t catch the lecture, just
remember to shower, brush
your teeth and apply a
moderate amount of
deodorant.
There is also the trick of
“dressing properly.” The
Hoedads might be a flannel
shirt and Levi type of com
pany, but Xerox isn’t.
My suggestion is the ap
parel you wore to your
brother’s wedding — even if

If you come from a family of

An aunt or an uncle may be

But void of parental rela

personnel office to show off?
A solid application with a good
