EUCON, a local science fiction convention featuring nationally known writers, artists, films, and more, will materialize Friday through Sunday at the Eugene Conference Center. Festivities begin at 6 p.m. Friday night with an opening reception for guests Spider Robinson, Charles Brown, Dean Ing, John Varley, M K Wren, Damon Knight, Kate Wilhelm, Lou Goble, and Rosco Wright. Follow ing the reception, Robinson, author of the Callahan's Crosstime Saloon stories and the Nebula Award-winning novellette “Stardance,” will speak and perform some of his songs. Also on tap Friday is the Punday Night contest which will consist of people presenting the best (worst?) puns they can come up with until told to stop. Saturday will be packed with panel discus sions. Scheduled from 10 a m. through the rest of the day are talks and round tables on: • “Art Techniques,” with Wright, art in structor at Lane Community College. • “Surviving a Nuclear Holocaust" with Varley, award winning author of "The Opiouchi Hotline,” “Persistence of Vision," “Titan” and “Wizard;” Ing, author of "Targets" and considered one of the nation's leading survivalists. • "Word Processing Equipment; Humor in Science Fiction; Old Guard Fandom" with Brown, founder and editor of Locus, the newspaper of the science fiction and fantasy world. • "Publishing a Fanzine” also with Brown. • “British Video” with representatives from the Hitchhiker's (Guide to the Galaxy) Guild, Friend's of the Dr. (Who) and various film clips from well-known and obscure British television. • "Fantasy and Adventurous Costuming” with local designers Nick Gerety and Kathy Freedman. • "The Myster-SF Connection" with Varley, Wren and Wilhelm, all of whom have written both science fiction and mystery stories. • And "Panels I’ve Always Wanted to Be On" with Knight, Wilhelm, and Varley. Saturday night ends with a Masquerade Competition and Costume Ball. A pre judging session for costumes will be held at 6 p m., the public dance spectacle is set for 8 p.m Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: Known Character, Original Character, Group, Child, and Presentation. Participants for the contest should pre-register at the main registration desk by 3 p.m. Saturday The ball is open to all. A special buffet breakfast will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday morning for $7 75. Also on Sunday is an Art Auction. Gandalf's Crystal Tower, 740 Willamette, is hosting autograph parties for the special guests on both Friday and Saturday at 4:30 p.m Friday’s gathering is primarily for Spider Robin son. Both parties are open to the public whether they attend the convention or not. The Video Room will have films and televi sion shows running continuously from 8 p.m Friday through noon Sunday. Films scheduled by press time are "Star Wars," "Star Trek II," Superman II," “Blade Runner," and "Conan " Episodes from television shows like " U F O , "Space: 1999," and "Dr Who" will be shown, as well as rare British shows from series like "Blake’s Seven" and “Sapphire & Steel." Tickets for EUCON are $9 a day or $17 for all three days.
