Women waltz to win over OSU By Ooug Levy Of ttw Emerald Corvallis — It was noon, and the women’s shot put was about to begin, but Oregon’s Quenna Beasley was nowhere to be found. “I thought it started later,” she said with a laugh. No matter. After lifting weights in the morning, Beasley arrived at Wayne Valley Field in Corvallis just in time for the meet with Oregon State, took no warmups, and still threw a lifetime best of 52-1 Vz to win the event. Shortly afterwards, she hopped in her car and left. Beasley wasn’t the only Duck woman who took a ho-hum approach to the OSU meet. After a tough win against Cal Poly last week, Oregon left a lot of athletes in Eugene and went through the motions to record a 71-51 dual-meet win over the Beavers to go 5-1 on the season. "Quenna is amazing,” said Oregon coach Tom Heinonen. “She lifted weights this morning, got here just in time for the shotput, took no warmups, and still threw a lifetime best. Then she leaves a half-hour later. Maybe that’s the right approach to take for this meet.” Heinonen was talking about the inabili ty of his team to get up for the meet against an inferior Oregon State team. “It's pretty hard to find anything to get excited about for this meet," said Heinonen. “Until Oregon State gets more athletes, it’s going to be this way.” An exception was Beasley, who threw a PR in the shot for the second week in a row. “It didn’t feel like 52, and that’s good, because it means I have a lot left. I know there’s a 54 in me now.” Another solid performer was the ver satile Lisa Nicholson, who won the 100 hurdles in 14.38, led all the way in the 400 hurdles before being disqualified, and messed around with the high jump long enough to finish second at 5-4. “Actually, I came to Oregon to high jump,” said Nicholson, “but when I got here I found out I was wrong, and I became a hurdler.” Nicholson threatened the NCAA quali- - tying standard of 1:00.00 before being dis qualified, but she remained cheerful. “I would have been more unhappy if I had run a qualifying time," said Nicholson. “And I was pretty happy with my short hurdles.” It was a day to settle for mediocre times for the Ducks. Kim Roth won the 3,000 meters in an unspectacular 9:40.69, Lisa Martin was way off her best with a 4:29.26 win in the 1,500, and Carla Johnson won the 400 meters in 56.29 after a slow start. "She got off to a terrible start,” said Heinonen of Johnson, “but she finished well. She can go faster.” All in all, the Ducks looked spent after pulling out all the stops to beat Cal-Poly. “What can I say?” said Heinonen. “It just wasn’t that great of a meet." Except for a shotputter who was miles away already. Lakers, Sixers win playoff openers From Associated Pros* Reports Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Norm Nixon scored 30 points each Sunday, leading the Los Angeles Lakers 119-107 over the San Antonio Spurs in the opening game of the National Basketball Association Western Conference cham pionship series. Game Two in the best-of seven series will be played at the Forum Tuesday night before the action switches to San Antonio for the third and fourth games. San Antonio wasn't closer than seven points after that. Philadelphia 111, Milwaukee 109. Substitute guard Clint Richardson scored all seven points in an overtime period to trigger the Philadelphia 76ers to a 111-109 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks Sunday. Winter Hawks go 2-0 in Cup play PORTLAND (AP) — Portland’s Ken Yaremchuk scored three goals to lead the Winter Hawks to a 10-5 victory Sunday over the Oshawa Generals of Ontario in the Memorial Cup junior hockey tournament. The win raised Portland’s record to 2-0 in the tourna ment. If the Hawks beat Lethbridge tonight, they earn an automatic berth in Satur day's championship game. The Generals got an early lead in the first period on a short-handed goal by Don Biggs. They made it 2-0 about five minutes later when Norm Schmidt scored in a three-on three situation. Portland scored for the first time at 13:25 in the first period when Yaremchuk made it 2-1. /4rtisan y4utomotives Spring Specials Struts $79.95 installed Heavy Duty Shocks $12.95 installed Complete Brake Job $99.95 can for deta,is With a full brake job or installation of struts and shocks receive a free engine analysis on our Sun Diagnostic Computer.
