(AP) — Norm Nixon had what Los Angeles Coach Pat Riley call ed the game of his life Tues day night as the Lakers topped the Portland Trail Blazers 116-108 to win their National Basketball Association Western Conference semifinal playoff series. Nixon scored 21 of his career-high 36 points in a decisive first half as the Lakers, who won the best-of seven series 4-1, took the first step toward becoming the first NBA team to win back-to-back championships since the Boston Celtics did it in 1967-68 and 1968-69. The Lakers will face the win ner of the San Antonio-Denver series for the Western Con ference championship in another best-of-seven affair starting at the Forum either Sunday afternoon or next Tuesday night. The Spurs lead that series 3-1 with game five scheduled ¥ Wednesday night at San Antonio. "I needed a big game," Nix on said. “When I was in my groove in the second and third quarters, my teammates kept feeding me. It was critical that I have a good game because I’m expected to have a good game.” The Lakers raced to a 34-11 advantage over the Blazers in the opening 8:16 of play. Portland wasn't closer than the final margin of eight points after that. Ducks fifth in Pac-10 tourney Oregon’s five-player total of 382 was Tuesday's third best team score, but the performance only pushed the Ducks from sixth to fifth after 54 holes of the Pac-10 Con ference golf championships at the Los Angeles North Country Club. UCLA, the tournament favorite, holds a commanding 17-stroke advantage on Southern California, who was also expected to make a run at the crown. The Bruins’ Steve Pate shot the only sub-par round of the tournament with a four-under 67 to give his team a 1,105 total. The Trojans are at 1,122, with Stanford 35 strokes back at 1,157, Arizona at 1,161 and the Ducks with 1,169, 64 strokes off the pace. Pate’s 67, along with a 75-74 score from Monday’s 36 holes, gives him a 54-hole total of 216 and a two-shot edge over teammate Jay Delsing and USC’s Sam Randolph for the individual honors. The Ducks are led by freshman George Daves, who has put together rounds of 78, 76 and 74 for a 228 total. Sophomore Paul Weinhold fired a five-over 76 to put him at 229 with the concluding 18 holes today. Oregon coach Jim Ferguson called his team’s scores from the first 36 holes ‘‘awful,’’ but was a little more op timistic after Tuesday. "We played better today, but we still have a ways to go the LA Country Club course is certainly one of the toughest we have played,” Ferguson said.
