Go for a different American gusto By Frank Shaw Of the Emerald After a hard day's work chucking the frisbee around, running around Alton Baker park and generally just raising hell, Joe Student returns to his quad, pulls a six-pack of Bud, or Buckhorn or maybe even generic beer from his frig and slams down the pack. Faintly dissatisfied, and not quite sure why, he stares in disappointment at the rem nants of the beer. Everyone who has traveled in Europe soon realizes that not all beer has to taste like Bud, and not all beer is a mellow golden color. For those who like a little variety, and those who are just tired of drinking the same type of beer with different names on the label, take heart. America does brew some good beers. Right from the time the bottle is open ed, it becomes obvious that Anchor Steam beer is not going to win a Bud look alike contest. Its color is darker and its scent is more pronounced. Brewed in San Francisco, Anchor Steam is a little bitter compared to many other American beers, with a distinctive bite. After a couple sips, you get used to it. This is not the type of beer you chug down after a hard days work in the of fice. It’s meant to be sipped, not guzzl ed. You’ll regret it if you try to chug it. If you’ve gotten used to being able to read through the other side of your glass Photo by Bob Baker David Andrews, owner of The Bavarian, has a fine line of premium American beers. with the beer in it, Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale will be a switch for you. Celebration Ale's scent is sweeter than the Anchor Steam, and the beer follows suit, with an interestingly sweet flavor and a mellow aftertaste. Even though it sounds like a contradiction, it’s also more bitter than a Coors drinker is used to. If you want to drink a premium American Beer, but don’t want to give up too much of the taste you’re used to, Cold Spring Export is a good one to start with. It’s lighter in color than any of the others, with little scent to speak of. There is little or no aftertaste and while it is a little bitter compared to a Michelob, it’s not strong enough to cause problems. A porter is a variety of ale in which roasted barley is used to achieve a dark color. Pottersville Dark Porter Brew fits the definition. When the label says dark, it means it. This beer has the color of a glass of Coca-Cola, with a taste to match the col or. It’s strong. If you’ve never tasted malt in a beer before, you’ll know what it tastes like after a few sips of Pottersville Dark. The scent reaches from the bottle and grabs you by the nose. This might be a good one for clearing up those lingering clog ged sinuses. Anchor Porter also has the color of a glass of Coke and the flavor to match. The malt in the beer is easily discerni ble, and this is another of those beers you would not want to drink fast. A strong aftertaste and a strong scent mark this one. If you liked the Dark Porter, you’ll like this one.
