The year started so well for freshman Shari
Collins — a school record in the high jump in
her first meet as a Duck, and a ranking of sixth
in the United States by Track and Field News,
the gospel of the sport.
Pretty heady stuff for someone coming
from a tiny town like Chiloquin in southern
Oregon. And the season had barely begun.
But that record-setting meet has come
back to haunt Collins and will probably lead to
her sitting out this season as a redshirt.
Collins injured her shin as a chain reaction
resulting from trying to jump 6-3 in the Portland
Indoor, following her record setting jump of 6-1.
Collins bruised her heel, and in an effort to
compensate for it, she later began landing on
her toe instead of her heel when she jumped.
The pressure on her toes caused painful
shinsplints.
“It’s bad,” Collins says of redshirting “I
guess it’s better that I do it because I keep hur
ting my leg, but I sure wish I didn't have to.”
“Her leg isn't getting any better,” says
Mark Stream, assistant track coach. “It’s mak
ing the problem even worse by her continuing,
so the smart thing to do is redshirt her —
unfortunately.”
There’s no doubt it's unfortunate. Collins
will have to undergo the formality of seeing a
doctor, something she's been doing a lot of
lately, to certify the injury, but as far as Stream
is concerned “we’re redshirting her.”
“I really just want to jump,” says Collins. “I
hate sitting out because I feel like I'm letting
everyone down.”
Collins doesn’t have any choice on the red
shirting, but the one thing she doesn’t have to
worry about is letting down others.
Coming out of Chiloquin, where Collins
was the valedictorian in a graduating class of
24, Collins emerged as one of the top jumpers
in the nation. She won the junior national cham
pionship last year, and was third at the Pan
American Junior Games in Venezuela during
the summer.
Not bad considering she faced no com
petition as a high schooler, and would usually
pass until the bar reached 5-3, by which time
everyone else had defaulted out of the
competition.
"It was weird jumping against other peo
ple,” says Collins of coming to Oregon. "I was
always used to jumping by myself. Now, the bar
starts at 5-6 and there’s still other people
around. It used to be so easy," she says with a
laugh.

FOR THE DISTINGUISHED TEACHING AWARD
The Ersted Award for Distinguished Teaching is presented annually. It is awarded to
relatively young members of the faculty who have demonstrated exceptional ability to induce
students to reason rather than memorize.
There will be two awards this year, each accompanied by a gift of $1000. The selection
ommittee for the 1983 recipients is now seeking nominations from students, faculty, staff and
alumni, and invites your nomination. It must be in writing and should indicate the reasons for

another mark on Oregon's redshirt list
But the lack of “real competition” has
made Collins "more than a little intimidated —
I was scared to death going against the good
jumpers. I still am, but it's not quite so bad
anymore," Collins says.
Stream, too, is worried about the inex
perienced Collins being a little too reverent of
her competition. Despite the fact she has
already proven she is in the same class with the
top jumpers, he doesn’t want her jumping until
she is ready.
Collins will have plenty of company on that
redshirted list with Lean Warren, Eryn Forbes,
Sally Harmon, and Grace Bakari already there.
“It should be the year we expected this
year to be," says Stream. “But that doesn’t
necessarily help us now."
Collins, too, is looking forward to next
year.
"I can't wait to jump. I wish so much that I
had only an average or below-average indoor
season and was now jumping 6-1 instead of
before.”
