Cowboys grab Walter, Houston takes Brown

The Baltimore Colts No. 1
draft pick John Elway made
the biggest noise on draft day
in the National Football
League Tuesday but a pair of
Oregon Ducks were heard
from, too.
Mike Walter, the Ducks’ All
Pac-10 defensive end, and
Steve Brown, a pre season All
American pick last season at
defensive back were also pick
ed in the early rounds of an
nual NFL derby.
Walter was chosen in the
second round by the Dallas
Cowboys while Brown was
tabbed by the Houston Oilers
in the third round.
Both were a little amazed to
be taken so early in the draft
and also a bit surprised by the

Parcourse Fun Run - Today (Wed. April 27). Meet at the
signboard on Pre's Trail at 4:00 p.m. SHARP! Test your
overall fitness level by running as well as exercising.
Distance 1, 2, 3, 4, KM, your choice. Run the parcourse
including the exercise stations. See you there.
Golf Scramble League- If you would enjoy an
afternoon of relaxation on the golf course,
SCRAMBLE is for you. What is it, you ask? It
is a two-person team. This means that both
players hit from the best lie on each shot. The person
with the poorest lie retrieves their ball and places it at
the best line position. Score as if one player is playing.
Entry blanks are available at 103 Gerlinger. Deadline to
sign up is Thursday, April 28, 5:00 p.m. Games are
played Tuesdays in May at Laurelwood. __
Ultimate Frisbee League- Entry deadline
Friday, April 29, 5:00 p.m. Games are
played Monday through Friday between
3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Play begins on
Monday, May 2. Get your team together
now. There will be co-ed, women's and
men's divisions.

Track & Field Meet will be Friday, May 6 and Saturday, May 7. Team
and individual entries are allowed. Enter a men's, women's, or co-ed
team. The meet will be held at Hayward Field. Run in the "tracks"
of the other greats that burn up the track.

franchises they went to.
"I knew Dallas was a little
interested in me but I didn't
think that I would go in the se
cond round,” admitted Walter.
“If I was going to go in the se
cond round I thought it might
be to San Francisco. All along
I was never sure how in
terested the Cowboys were.”
"I never did any testing or
even talked to Houston,” said
Brown. “I am really surprised
that Houston picked me and
also that I went in the third
round.
“I'm really excited because I
have never been to Houston. I
just hope they need me and I
am not going down there just
to be going there."
Walter, who starred at
defensive end for Oregon dur
ing his four years as a Duck, is
slated to become a linebacker
at Dallas. With his size, 6-4,
240 pounds, the Cowboys see
him too small for a defensive
end role but just right for a
linebacker position.
“I think I am really best
suited for the position
(linebacker),” Walter said. “I
think I have the tools and the
athletic ability to play
linebacker. I knew before the
draft they needed help at
linebacker.”
Brown, too, feels he has a
good chance at fitting in the
Houston system. The Oilers
have been beset by many pro
blems in the their defensive
secondary and the time may
be right for Brown to step in
and earn a spot on the roster.
“I know that they need help
in the secondary,” said Brown.
“I hope that I will be able to
help.”
Brown is also still entertain
ing thoughts of the United
States Football League. The
Arizona Wranglers have ex
pressed interest in Brown, and
now with his early selection in
the draft, his stock certainly
will rise.
"I am still considering the
USFL and I am going to talk
with Arizona,” Brown said.
But it was Elway who was
the talk of the draft before and
after.
Before the draft, Elway in
dicated that if the Baltimore
Colts drafted him, he would
not play football but instead
turn to baseball. Sure enough,
the Colts picked Elway as the
No. 1 selection and the former
Stanford star called the Colts
Tuesday morning and told
them he was going to play
baseball.
The rest of the draft went as
expected. Los Angeles, pick
ing in the number two posi
tion, nabbed Eric Dickerson of
Southern Methodist as its
pick. Seattle, which went third,
picked up Curt Warner of Penn
State.
Every team in the American
Conference Eastern Division
selected a quarterback. Buf
falo picked Miami’s Jim Kelly,
Illinois’ Tony Eason went to
New England, Miami selected
Pittsburgh’s Dan Marino and
the New York Jets went with
Cal-Davis’ Ken O'Brien.
Golfers net easy win
The Oregon golf team
posted its second tournament
victory in two weeks with an
easy 44-stroke win in the
Portland State Rippling River
Tournament which ended play
Monday.
The Ducks entered the final
18 holes with a 33-stroke ad
vantage and Paul Weinhold's
final day 69 enabled him to
take medalist honors.
Oregon’s Mark Sivara fired
an incredible 64 on Monday
which moved him from sixth
after the first day to second
after the 54 holes.
