Thompson and Jim Paxson
each scored 25 points
Wednesday night to spark the
Portland Trail Blazers to a
108-97 upset victory over Seat
tle in the opener of a National
Basketball Association
miniseries.
The underdog Blazers can
wrap up the best-of-three
series with a win in Portland
Friday night. A third game, if
necessary, will be played here
Sunday. The winner of the
series will face defending
NBA champion Los Angeles.
Portland, which split six
regular-season games with
Seattle, led 59-45 at halftime
Clippers coach sunk
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Paul
Silas, victimized by injuries
during his three years as head
coach of the San Diego Clip
pers of the National Basket
ball Association, was fired
Wednesday.
After a morning meeting
with Silas, General Manager
Paul Phipps announced that
Silas’ contract had not been
renewed.
“We recognize that there
have ben some factors beyond
Paul’s control which con
tributed to the club’s record
during his tenure,” Phipps
said, in an apparent reference
to the player injuries.
‘‘We do feel, however, that
the Clippers are at a turning
point, and we believe the
team’s interests may be better
served by some new direction
on the court.”
He said no decision had
been made concerning a
replacement.

Blazers' advantage to seven
points at 97-90 on a pair of
Sikma free throws with 5:26
remaining.
But a Thompson layup with
5:10 to go and a Paxson layin
with 4:13 remaining put
Portland ahead 101-90
Ducks sedate on letter-of-intent day
Wednesday’s official opening of the
basketball letter-of-intent season passed
without any surprises for the Oregon basket
ball program.
Last week the Ducks got commitments
from a pair of junior college players, but
coach Don Monson was unable to corral the
point guard he wanted. And unless a player
who can fill one of the Ducks need appears
on the scene in the next month, Monson will
hold on to his remaining scholarships.
What the Ducks did get is 6-7 forward
George Trapp and guard Chris Harper, who
will come north from California Junior Col
lege. Trap is a shooting forward with good
quickness who comes from College of the
Canyons and Harper is an off guard from
Shasta Junior College.
“The two we did recruit will help us with
our overall team quickness and some with
our outside shooting,” Monson said.
Monson battled the disadvantage of ar
riving at Oregon late and barely missed out
on a pair of freshman. One, forward Derrick
Riley from East Bakersfield, Calif., was lost
to Fresno State. The other was 6-4 guard
Scott Johnson who went to Southern
Methodist. Johnson is from Meridan, Idaho,
and was recruited by Monson at Idaho
before he came to Oregon.
"With recruiting you never seem to get
everyone you want," Monson said.
Monson indicated that he is willing to
save his remaining scholarships for next
year if no player who can help his programs
surface before the signing deadline. "If
there is somebody still available who can
help us before May 15 then we’ll go ahead
and sign them. If not we'll put our scholar
ships in the bank and save them for next
year."
