’ AT LAST, A STORE
FOR THE TRUE
COLLECTOR."
Nothing is sacred to the Dead Kennedys — everything is a target — from the obvious to the slime.
Dead Kennedys: the angst of punk
Angst.
It’s got to be angst that goads the Dead
Kennedys.
There’ll be angst all over when the Dead Ken
nedys play Eugene’s W.O.W. Hall tonight at 8 p.m.
Angst is a quality of fear or anxiety. Angst in
fuses the Dead Kennedys’ songs. Angst typifies
Dead Kennedys’ shows. But most of all angst tinges
the Dead Kennedys’ lyrics.
“Now it’s 1984
knock knock knocking
on your front door.
It’s the suede denim secret police.
They have come for your uncool niece. ”
California uber alles
The Dead Kennedys have been hailed as a major
punk force in America. They are caliTd “hardcore” in
America but not in Britain. There they are known for
the minimalist “spirit” of their instrumentals that
harks back to the beginnings of punk.
American punk is rendered vapid by most
groups — except the Dead Kennedys. They can
perceive and represent the disaffection of American
youth for that dream fat father and fat mother blindly
followed over a cliff for evermore.
Dead Kennedys aren’t “Rebels Without a Clue”
— they understand that to survive one must think
quick and react.
The Dead Kennedys are Jello Biafra, lyricist and
lead vocals, East Bay Ray, on guitar, Klaus Flouride,
bass and Darren Peligro, drums.
The band formed in late 1978 when Biafra moved
to San Francisco from his native Boulder, Colo. Most
fans consider their first album, “Fresh Fruit for Rot
ting Vegetables," their best, the very essence of
American punk.
It is American, but it doesn’t necessarily define
punk in this country. The wailing guitars of East
Coast punk are different from the almost surf-sound
rasping guitars of California punk.
That nothing is sacred to the Dead Kennedys
points out that everything, even punk, becomes
sanctified over time. Biafra’s lyrics hold the perspec
tive that everything and everyone is a target — from
the obvious to the slime.
“No, I'm not here to learn,
I just want to get drunk
and major in business
and be taught how to fuck. ”
Terminal Preppie
Songs with titles like “Terminal Preppie" (a
rather appropriate song for the Eugene show), “Win
nebago Warrior" and “Plastic Surgery Disasters” il
lustrate Dead Kennedys’ diverse targets.
But the lyrics have a political and potent
message. In Britain, punk is generally anger and
disenfranchisement but it lacks an overall message.
A few $6 advance and $7 at-the-door tickets re
main for the Dead Kennedys show, which is spon
sored by Northwest Concerts. Opening for the show
will be Portland’s Theater of Sheep and Eugene’s
E-13.
