University has public hearing
on student conduct revisions
The University will hold a
public hearing today on a
series of revisions to the stu
dent code of conduct.
The hearing will be held at 3
p.m. in Room 101 EMU. Muriel

How to do it:
1. Obtain a Preliminary Time Schedule of Classes
and Course Request Form at the following
locations:
• EMU
• Academic Advising and Student Services
• Office of the Register
• Academic Departments
2. Develop a class schedule with your
department academic adviser*
3. Submit completed Request Form to the
Office of the Registrar, Oregon Hall.
4. Register for classes September 22-23
5. All course request participants will be given
early priority registration times.

One ammendment in
creases the jurisdiction of the
code to include the time
period between terms unless a
student gives written notice to
the University Registrar’s of
fice to terminate student
status. The change is
necessary to prevent students
not technically enrolled in
classes from using University
services.
Another amendment
broadens the definition of
"student” to include applica
tions for admission, housing,
financial aid or other Universi
ty services requiring student
status. The change makes per
sons seeking student status
accountable for the honesty of
their statements in submitted
materials.
Copies of the proposed
amendments are available at
several campus locations, in
cluding the library reference
section and the offices of the
University president, 110
Johnson hall, and of the ASUO
president in Suite 4, EMU.
Written and oral statements
may be presented at the hear
ing, and written statements
also may be sent to Jackson at
110 Johnson Hall before the
hearing.
Police save woman
in suicide attempt
A 23-year-old University stu
dent who tried to jump from
the top floor of a downtown
Eugene parking garage Mon
day was taken unharmed back
to the psychiatric unit at
Sacred Heart Hospital, accor
ding to the Eugene Police
Department.
The woman, who also at
tempted suicide last week,
had committed herself to the
Johnson Unit of the hospital,
police said. Tom Lawry,
hospital community relations
director, said Monday that the
unit, a voluntary facility, can
not detain anyone not legally
committed to the unit by the
state.
According to a police report,
Officer Robert Spinks was
stopped by an unidentified ci
ty employee about 7:20 a.m.
Monday. The employee told
him the woman was threaten
ing to jump off top ledge of the
Overpark structure at 10th
Avenue and Oak Street.
Spinks reportedly climbed
to the northwest corner of the
ledge where the woman sat.
When he got within 10 feet of
the woman, she yelled “Don’t
come any closer,” according
to the report.
The officer then moved
behind the woman, grasped
her around the waist and pull
ed her off the ledge. She was
released to the Johnson Unit,
according to police.
No citations were issued in
the incident.
