China stops exchange programs
over tennis player’s defection
PEKING (AP) - China on
Thursday canceled all remain
ing sports and cultural
exchange programs with the
United States this year in sharp
retaliation for America's
granting political asylum to a
leading woman tennis player.
Among other things, the
decision means the Chinese
won’t see "Star Wars,” and the
Americans won't see China’s
volleyball champs play.
China’s Culture Ministry and
the All-China Sports Federation
announced the cancellation of
eight cultural exchange
programs and China’s
withdrawal from 10 international
tournaments in the United
States in 1983
Radio Peking also broadcast
interviews with the parents of
19-year-old Hu Na, who slipped
away from a Chinese tennis
team in the United States last
July and said she had been
threatened in China because of
her refusal to join the
Communist Party to serve as a
model for youth
Miss Hu’s mother spoke of the
family’s anguish over the
separation and said she thought
of her daughter every minute
Her father called the U S
granting of asylum a “swindle’’
because “there was no ques
stion of political persecution' of
their daughter
The cancellations followed a
strong Chinese government
protest Wednesday night that
called the U S. a'ction illegal,
immoral and “one more case’’
of U S. interference in China’s
internal affairs.
U S. Embassy spokesman
Mark Crocker said, “We deeply
regret the Chinese overreaction
to the Hu Na case.”
White House spokesman
Larry Speakes told reporters in
Washington, “It is our belief that
good relations between the U S.
and China are a benefit to both
sides, and it's important that we
view our differences in the
perspective of the broader,
bilateral relationship.”
The Chinese decision
apparently will not affect
China’s plans to send about 300
athletes to the 1984 Summer
Olympics in Los Angeles, its first
full-scale participation in a
summer games.
Blazers lose
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - With

forward Lewis Lloyd leading the
way, the Golden State Warriors
defeated the favored Portland
Trail Blazers 118-107 in
National Basketball Association
action Thursday night
Floyd, a rookie who has
moved into a starting role with
Golden State, scored a career
high 27 points before fouling
out with 2:44 remaining in the
game
Floyd hit nine of 15 shots,
grabbed five rebounds and
added one assist in 36 minutes
of play
Lloyd scored 24 points as the
Warriors placed four men in
double figures, with center J.B
Carroll adding 20 and Mickey
Johnson 18.
Portland was led by guard Jim
Paxson, who tallied 21 points
Forward Mychal Thompson, a
15-point per game scorer for
Portland, was held to just six
points
The order does not apply to
tourism and also apparently
does not affect the 8,000 to
10,000 Chinese students and
scholars in the United States
and the 300 American students
and 250 experts in China
The Ministry of Culture said
the cancellation covers all items
so far not carried out under the
1982-83 governmental cultural
exchange accord.
The sports events China now
will not enter are tournaments in
water polo, women’s softball,
track and field, cycling, eque
strian events, wind surfing,
swimming, rowing, canoeing
and a pre-Olympic volleyball
tournament in October
