University Professor Amit Goswami and his wife Maggie are co-authors of a book that urges science fiction writers to be more scientific in their fiction. Probing sci-fi’s black holes Hyperspace and black holes, reac tionless drives and time travel, telepathy and teleportation — the realm of the science fic tion writer. But these ideas don’t belong only to science fiction writers anymore. University physics Prof. Amit Goswami recently com pleted a book exploring the physics of science fiction. Goswami, with help from his wife Mag gie, co-wrote the book, “The Cosmic Dancers,” which was published last month. “It is an effort to bring together the idea that science and science fiction have a com mon base,” Goswami says. “Each gains from the other." “Science often becomes absorbed in the superstructure," he says. “They (scien .v.v.vj tists) don’t see the whole thing." But science fiction writing can examine the whole structure, he says. “It provides critical insight at critical times.” Goswami uses history to show how close science fiction sometimes comes to predicting science. The book, which took about two years to write, explains in non-scientific jargon the physics behind theories of star travel, black holes, hyperspace and time travel. Goswami got the idea for the book from his course entitled “The Physics of Science Fiction," designed to popularize science. Goswami says ideas proposed in science fiction stories break into three categories: futuristic, possible and impossible. Anthony Lewis, awarded two Pulitzer Prizes for journalism, will be on campus Tuesday and Wednesday.
