It’s a good idea to vary the time courses are offered,
particularly the required courses with numerous sections.
University Departments and Schools starting in the fall,
must schedule one class in the morning, one in the after
noon, and one in the late afternoon or evening among all
courses offered four or more times in a term.
The policy will end the rush to get "prime time” (9:30
a m. to 3:30 p.m.) classes, however popular they are with
teachers and students.
The policy released in memos by Provost Richard Hill
and Registrar Wanda Johnson also "urge" departments to
reschedule other classes in the early morning and late
afternoon.
The off-beat hours policy is meant to increase enroll
ment. It is in keeping with the Strategic Plan suggestion, that
institutions do all they can to increase enrollment — but
cheaply.
By having classes in the early morning, late afternoon
and evenings, students who work half or full-time, students
who want a class more than they want sleep, or students who
are willing to forego running before dinner will have a crack
at popular classes.
The new hours might actually create a few required
courses that have less than 100 people in them.
It’s a good guess on the part of the administration as to
what students want.
Now, we ll cross our fingers and see if the registrar's
office lives up to its promise to conduct a demand-analysis —
a tally of classes returning students want. Then they would
actually find out what classes and what hours students really
want in the fall of 1983.

Congratulations to Joan
Nyland for terrific insight and
common sense in her essay
about our reactions to crime
Perhaps if she will now teach a
remedial course in logic to the
rest of the Emerald editorial
staff in the future we will be
spared such egregious exam
ples of journalism as the opinion
column tabled, "Funding the
Choice ”
While Nyland’s essay made us
realize that trying to eradicate
crime rather than examining its
causes is futile, the aforemen
tioned editorial shed no such
light on the topic of abortion It
is after all, unnecessary to have
an abortion without bearing a
child, and impossible to bear a
child without getting pregnant
With the insight of Descartes,
we can thus assume that if a
woman does not get pregnant,
she will not need an abortion
It is then evident that a couple
(though the woman unfortuna
tely bears a disproportionate
amount of the responsibility)
may prevent the necessity of
abortion by practicing one of
the many methods of birth
control available, or heaven for
bid, a little abstinence on occa
sion
To assert that refusing to fund
abortions is to “deny poor
women control over their own
bodies" is ludicrous Nothing
could be farther from the truth
When the American people
decide to take control of their
own bodies, Uncle Sam will no
longer need to be in the
population control business
It is hedonism and the lack of
moral responsibility our gener
aton has come to accept that
causes us to think otherwise

I wonder what was offensive
to the students who objected to
Maranatha's abortion display in
the EMU lobby last week
Were they offended because
it's obvious from looking at the
babies/fetuses faces that the
babies/fetuses suffered from an
unconscionable form of torture
as their arms and legs were
suddenly twisted and cut off at
the joints
Perhaps, it's easier for those
students to think of abortion in
terms of euphemisms such as

This letter is addressed to
those who have displayed the
photos of the malformed fetuses
in the EMU showcase window
entitled ‘Holocaust." I'm not
sure what your cheap spread is
trying to prove, but what I gather
is that you hope either to make
those who have had abortions
feel guilty or you believe those
who decide to do so, don't know
what it is they are doing
Well, thank you, whoever you
are What would we weak,
stupid women do if we didn't
have self-righteous leaders
such as you tell us what to do
with our own bodies, our own
pregnancies and our own lives?
It is reassuring to know that
should we ever get into such a
position where we would have
to make such a choice, that we
don’t have to think for
ourselves? We can let you be
our judge
Next time a woman is carrying
an unhealthy fetus that neither
she nor her mate can care for,
I'll let them know you will be
more than willing to care for that
child and person throughout his
or her entire lifetime
Next time a woman gets
pregnant (or a young girl), and
has no means of supporting
herself or her child, I'll send her
in your direction so you may
provide a home and food for
both of them.
Or when the unwanted, bat
tered children show up at the
already taxed social agencies,
I'll let them know you will
provide all the care those chil
dren need, making things all
better.
For your information, anti
abortion folk, I think your gaudy
displays have a reverse effect
on what you are trying to
achieve There is a difference
between talking to people in an
empathetic, caring, logical way,
and condemning them from a
self-built ivory tower

A letter of a few weeks ago
from Ms Gaston with its claims
of salvation coming from the
study of the works of the "Lord”
has left me with a bad taste in
my mouth Gaston asks that we
study the Bible yet, she and the
people in her faith refuse to
study the thousands of books
that are the basis of the ar
gument which those in doubt of
her religion have studied
Ms Gaston, why do you and
your single source feel that we
are the ones that have trouble
with tunnel vision? When you
and the others of your faith take
a single book of doubtful origin
and claim that it is the only
Truth, it strikes me that the real
tunnel vision is in your end of
the ballpark When you can
show the same respect for those
of us that are in pursuit of
knowledge outside of faith, we
will give a bit more respect to
the ideas you teach Don't ex
pect others to listen to the
claims of those who don't prac
tice what they preach.

I have studied at Oregon four
years now and each time I see
classic cinema on campus it is
spoiled by an unappreciative
and disrespectful audience. But
a showing on Jan 26 was the
limit.
"West Side Story” by Leon
ard Bernstein is a now classic
20th century operetta It is tragic
and romantic And it employs
classic conventions to evoke
corresponding feelings. But did
the Eugene audience under
stand this? Did the Eugene
audience respect the rights of
those of us who were trying to
enjoy the performance? Did the
audience appreciate traditional
operatic convention as the her
oine Maria sang to her lover and
hero, Tony?
Of course not. Anyone at the
performance would testify that
the audience was rude and dis
tasteful in their obnoxious and
ill-timed laughter during classic
sc}nes
And the point is that the
Eugene and campus audience
is always ill-behaved and not
just on that night. It has been
equally obnoxious at "Gone
with the Wind," "Wuthering
Heights," "Casablanca,” and
the numerous other films.
Why is the audience so un
educated and ill-bred? So sel
fish as to spoil our enjoyment of
classic cinema?
Please, the next time Hitch
cock or Shakespeare come to
the screen, stay home and eat
granola or something Pop
corn, roast hot dogs and drink
Coca-Cola Only don’t infringe
on our right to view and ap
preciate good cinema in peace

Victims
According to last Friday's
Emerald, the Eugene Police
decided last week that "they do
not intend to bring charges
against a 30-year-old University
student for shooting a man in
the back after he raped her last
weekend.”
Well, how sweet of them!
Why should they even con
sider bringing charges against a
rape victim for shooting the man
who raped her? She should not
only be allowed by law to shoot
the man who raped her, but she
should be allowed to shoot to
kill (If she had killed him I’m sure
she'd be convicted for murder).
Isn’t it time our society started
protecting the victims of rape
instead of the criminals?
