Partisans squabble in senate
SALEM (AP) — Senate President Ed
Fadeley’s weekend comment that he didn’t
want to put any Republicans “infected with
Reaganomics” on a House-Senate committee
escalated a partisan squabble over the subject
Monday.
Senate Minority Leader Tony Meeker, R
Amlty, told the Senate that Fadeley’s credibility
had been damaged by his statement that the
Joint Trade and Economic Development Com
mittee was too important a pane! on which to
put someone “infected with Reaganomics.”
The Eugene Democrat made the comment in an
interview aired Sunday on Portland’s KGW-TV.
Meeker said Fadeley’s comment didn’t
square with his initial explanation that it was an
oversight that he didn’t give a Republican one
of five Senate slots on the 11-member panel.
Fadeley has refused to change the lineup,
although ha has said he supports a bill that
would add one Senate member to the
committee.
Democrats control the Senate 21-9.
The committee Is to consider the bill,
SB29S, Tuesday. Changing the size of the com
mittee requires legislation because the panel
by law is a permanent one that operates year
round.
The Senate president and House speaker
automatically are members of the committee.
The House has five additional members, and
the Senate has four.
Even if the bill passes the Senate, it's like
ly to run into problems in the House. The
House, with 60 members, frequently has oppos
ed giving the 30-member Senate equal member
ship on joint committees.
Suspected arsonist caught in L.A.
SALEM (AP) — A man
whose house and fence were
painted with racial siurs as the
house burned last December
was arrested in Los Angeles
Monday in connection with
the fire, Salem police said.
Robert White was arrested
for conspiracy to commit ar
son and tampering with a
witness, both felonies, and at
tempted theft, a misdemeanor,
Lt. Ron Sonderman said.
When firefighters respond
ed to the blaze Dec. 23 in
south Salem, they found the
letters “KKK” spray-painted in
large white letters on the
home. A message on a nearby
fence read, “KKK Merry Xmas
Nigera.”
Authorities at the time
believed the fire was racially
motivated. Gasoline cans were
found at the scene.
Sonderman said Monday
police had reason to believe
the person who wrote the
spray-painted messages “was
the person who actually struck
the match.”
He said the attempted theft
charge was in connection with
items in the house. The arrest
resulted from a warrant issued
Friday following an investiga
tion by city police, Sonderman
said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Pres. Ronald Reagan, the oldest man
to serve as president, celebrated his 72nd birthday with a
helicopter ride in a snowstorm, a brief party and a quiet dinner
with friends, aides say.
Reagan began his birthday at nearby Camp David, Md., but
returned to the White House early when a winter storm threaten
ed to isolate the Catoctln Mountain retreat Sunday morning.
After a flight that took twice the usual 20 minutes, Marine One
made an Instrument approach to the South Lawn on the White
House and landed safely at 11:15 a.m. EST, about five hours
ahead of schedule.
White House aides said members of Young Republican clubs
had planned to give the president a cake at a brief party at the
White House. The cake reportedly bore six candles to wish
Reagan six more years in office.
