Ducks throw away win over ASU
TEMPE, Ariz. — The Pac-10 Conference’s
leading free throw shooting team didn't show it
here Saturday night.
The Oregon Ducks, who were shooting free
throws at a 78-percent clip in their Pac-10
games, shot just eight of 22 (36.3-percent)
against Arizona State Saturday night en route
to a 54-52 loss.
“We have done well at the free throw line all
year and last night if we made our free throws
like we have done we would have won the
game," said Duck basketball coach Jim Haney
from Tempe Sunday. "I think we were too con
cerned about turning the ball over too much
when we had players at the free throw line. We
shouldn’t have been worrying about the other
things — we should have just concentrated on
the free throws.”
The Ducks' inability to cash in on their free
throws down the stretch proved to do them in
— but it shouldn’t have been.
Oregon had a opportunity after opportunity
to bury the Sun Devils in the second half. The
best came with 2:24 remaining in the game and
the Ducks holding a 51-45 advantage. But the
Ducks’ nemesis — the free throw — prevented
Oregon from running away with the game
In the next minute and a half Duck guard
Gary Gatewood missed a free throw and Donald
Dutton misfired on two out of three. The miss
ed free throws allowed Arizona State, led by
star guard Byron Scott, to climb back in the
game.
Scott eventually tied the game at 52-52 with
1:13 left when he canned a jump shot. The
Ducks then called timeout but then were
unable to cross midcourt before a questionable
10-second violation was called.
“I did have a chat with Booker (Turner, the
referee) after the call,” said Haney. "Only nine
seconds ran off the clock between the time we
called the timeout and the time the violation
was called. It was just one of those things.”
Arizona State took the possession and ran
down the clock until the final six seconds when
Scott drove the lane and nailed a a shot over a
falling Gary Gatewood, who was trying to draw
the offensive charge.
Next up for the Ducks is a game tonight with
the University of Arizona in Tucson.

SUAB composes one third of the University of Oregon’s Senate.
SUAB is an eighteen member elected body whose members are elected
for two year terms on a rotational basis SUAB members represent
specific academic departments and colleges SUAB is responsible for
academic policy input, student faculty committees, and minor academic
grievances

The ASUO Executive is the administrative focal point for student
initiated activities. The responsibilities of the Executive are divided into
three major areas, each with its own Vice Presidential office:
