Soap fans may
have to tune out
until spring term
Soap opera addicts will have
to wait until spring term to find
out whether the EMU TV will be
returned to the EMU, the EMU
House Committee decided
Thursday.
At an earlier meeting, Dan
Cohen, house committee
member, suggested the TV be
moved from its former location
near the Fishbowl to the
Recreation Center Sandy
Vaughn, director of Club
Sports, which borders the
Recreation Area, said there was
much "negative feeling" from
students toward having the
television in the Recreation
Area.
Vaughn said many students
thought that moving the TV to
the Recreation Area would
"eliminate the purpose of the
area, which is an activity area."
Student reaction to the
removal of the TV, despite the
popularity of afternoon soap
operas, was low, said Frank
Geltner, EMU assistant director
"I was suprised by the lack of
reaction" from soap opera fans,
Geltner said "They just went to
another place to watch the
soaps "
But one member said rein
stalling the TV is not a necessity
It is not our duty to provide a
TV." said Alan Scearce
The committee decided to
wait until spring term to decide
whether to reinstall the TV. not
ing that the problems with tran
sients that led to the TV's
removal will be alleviated by the
warm spring weather
In other business, the com
mittee considered what to do
with the former TV room that
remains unused An artist has
offered to create installed art"
in the room, said committee
member Paul Curtis Frank
Geltner described installed art
as "art you walk through
The artwork would not be
permanent, would cause no
room damage and would still
allow use of the room's door
ways and restrooms. Geltner
said
The committee also approved
moving the Fishbowl jukebox to
the Recreation Center The
move may increase revenue and
spark student interest in the
center Vaughn said
The committee also decided
to revamp guidelines for as
signing EMU office space to
student organizations The
committee allowed Students for
a Nuclear Free Future to con
tinue to use Suite 1 and the
remaining unused suite space,
pending a review of all EMU
building space
