Bands tuned for winter concerts

Performing groups at the University's Music
School are tuning up for a new year of perfor
mances wide in variety and low in expense.
Still savoring the experience of last May's
Japanese tour, the Wind Ensemble will be per
forming March 8 in Beall Hall Appearing with the
elite corps will be the Symphonic Band, which
gives non-music majors a chance to play in a
university-level concert organization The two
groups will accompany solo alto sax player and
recording artist Dale Underwood, formerly of the
U S Navy Band and the Boston Pops
Professor Wayne Bennet. director of bands,
says many non-music majors still find the Sym
phonic Band too "imposing "
Additional performances include a Feb 27
date at Beall Hall for the Symphonic Band,
and a trip to Fresno April 12 to 19 for the Wind
Ensemble, which was invited to play the finale
concert at the National Wind Band Symposium
On the way, Bennet plans to make stops “on both
sides of 1-5.”
As for the string scene, new conductor Mar
sha Mabrey is excited about the prospects for the
60-piece, highly renowned University Symphony
Orchestra
' We have an orchestra of the quality that can
tour and I'm real pleased about that."
And tour they will Along with the University
singers, the orchestra will visit Portland-area high
schools February 10 and II. UO students will get a
taste of the tour a day before, when the two
groups combine to perform, among other things,
Randall Thompson's "Americana" February 9
A new concept this year, Mabrey says, are the
45-minute, noontime concerts given to Eugene
secondary school children the day of the perfor
mance
"It's a preview of what the evening concert
will be like," Mabrey explains "A lot of kids really
don't have the opportunities to see a Symphony
