Six groups name Watt in law suit
WASHINGTON (AP) — Six environmental
groups, contending that Interior Secretary
James Watt acted illegally in removing 800.000
acres from wilderness protection, filed suit
Thursday to overturn the decision
The suit asks a federal district court in
Sacramento, Calif , to return the land in 10
Western states to its prior status as wilderness
study areas and block Watt from allowing any
development
’Secretary Watt’s deceptive, disreputable
and illegal action removing hundreds of
thousands of acres of public land from
wilderness consideration underscores his
fanatical determination to open wilderness to
development," said William Turnage, execu
tive director of the Wilderness Aassociation
The suit contends that Watt's Dec 28
decision violated legal requirements that an
environmental impact statement be prepared
assessing the action and that the public be
allowed to comment

Hotel residents see red
as new owner raises rent
PORTLAND (AP) - The sale
of a residential hotel to followers
of Indian guru Bhagwan Shree
Rajneesh has angered
residents whose rents will more
than double under the new
ownership
"I think I'll throw all my red
clothes out.” said a disgruntled
Janice Quaempts, 18, in
reference to the crimson-clad
followers of Rajneesh, who live
on a central Oregon ranch
The 76 residents of the
Martha Washington Hotel have
until Feb 11 to relocate or to
pay $25 a day The Rajneeshees
bought the hotel to house
believers who work at various
Rajneesh-owned businesses in
Portland
Ma Prem Isabel, Rajneeshee
spokeswoman, said the
residents are welcome to stay in
the hotel and get three
vegetarian meals a day if they
pay the higher rent. The
Rajneeshees have no aid plan
for current residents, she said.
The hotel has been run by the
non-profit Portland Women’s
Union and has charged $285
monthly for room and board
The new rent and meals charge
will be $25 daily, or about $750 a
month for members of the pub
lic.
“You can get a nice condo for
that,’’ said Pat Malone, the night
desk clerk who also has lived at
the hotel
"The main point is to whom
they sold," said Mario Busto,
assistant manager.
