Nuclear age brings fear, anger
to exiled Micronesia citizens

son, two experts on the
proposed Nuclear Free Pacific,
spoke about the terrors of
atomic bomb testing in
Micronesia, and presented
slides during a lecture Tuesday
Johnson, an American
journalist who spent much of his
life in the Pacific, said the Unit
ed States chose Micronesia for
its atomic tests after searching
for a location far away from its
own population centers
The (Micronesian) Marshall
Islands, until the 1940 s, were
basically self-sufficient and
secluded from the dangers of
war, Johnson said
"Ironically, it was their very
isolation which thrust the
Marshallese people into the
nuclear age,” he said.
Because of radiation
dangers, the Marshallese
people were evicted by United
States military to an island
called Ebeye, a move which
enrages Keju, a University of
Hawaii graduate who was born
on Ebeye
"Can you believe we need
passes to get onto our islands —
that we own — because they are
controlled by the military9" Keju
said
She explained how, if
Marshallese people visit an
island other than Ebeye, the
military police inspect them as
they leave and often confiscate
candy bars, Coca Cola and
other food items Johnson said
the police also will arrest any
natives wandering in these
areas after dark
Keju became even more
angered when she spoke about
the "lies’' put forth by the U S
government, which she said
tells the Marshallese people the
military is there to protect them
" From whom?' we say We
have no enemies. You may be
surprised to hear that the
Marshallese have no word for
enemy."
She said the US.
government's attitude is,
"They’re so nice and kind We
can just screw them (the
Marshallese)"
The Marshallese have been
protesting the military
involvement "You aren't going
to get away with this anymore,"
Keju said
Johnson and Keju also
described the severe health
problems that plague the Pacific
Islanders.
As early as two days after the
1954 testing of "Bravo," the
largest U S nuclear bomb,
people 300 miles away were
experiencing burns, dizziness
and weakness Their hair was

falling out and their fingernails
were falling off, Johnson said
Thyroid cancer, leukemia and
miscarriage all occur at higher
than-average rates in the
Marshall Islands.
Keju described recently-born
deformed babies as ' jellyfish."
"They are born, they lie there
on the labor table, they move
like they're breathing, but
they’re not shaped like humans
They are jellyfish," she said
On a positive note, Keju
praised those supporting the
nuclear freeze
"To you people of Oregon,
congratulations on the nuclear
freeze The people in Washing
ton, D C. won't last too much
longer if we all get together and
fight it."
Judge to discuss South African injustice
A federal judge, detained and
harassed by police during a trip
to South Africa, will discuss in
justice in that country at a public
forum Thursday

Henderson is one ot three
black American jurists who
were detained and interroyated
by security police In the South
African tribal homeland of
Cickel in August The three
were Invited by a South African
Olum honors civil rights leader;
names day commemorating King
Jan 15 has been designated

morative Day by University Pres
Paul Olum in response to a
recommendation of the
University Assembly in February
1981
In recognition of the day,
King's birthday, the flag at EMU
will be lowered to hall staff In
"respectful memory'' of King,
according to Olum

appointed Henderson to the
bench in 1980 A longtime civil
rights activist, Henderson
earlier worked with the U S
Justice Department's civil rights
division, handling voting-rights
cases in the South
