Jaworski dies of heart attack
WIMBERLY, Texas (AP) -
Leon Jaworski, the Texas
lawyer who as Watergate
special prosecutor helped force
the resignation of former Pres
Richard Nixon, died Thursday at
his ranch
Jaworski. 77. had a heart at
tack while cutting wood at his
Circle J Ranch, according to
Ellen Henderson, dispatcher at
Hays County Sheriff's Depart
ment in San Marcos
Jaworski's body was taken to
the Pennington Funeral Home
in San Marcos after he was
pronounced dead by the Justice
of the Peace Sonny Gold, she
said The body later was trans
ferred to Geo Lewis ana oons
funeral home in Houston, Hen
derson said
Jaworski had not returned to
the courtroom since 1974, when
he successfully argued before
the U S Supreme Court that the
White House had to release tape
recordings, which linked Nixon
to the Watergate scandal

case after you've argued the
United States versus Nixon'

said

Jaworski to take the job
Jaworski accepted after receiv
ing assurances he would have
the independence he wanted
Initially, he said, he didn't
believe Nixon was involved in
the Watergate cover-up That
changed after he heard the tape
of Nixon and then-White House
chief of staff H R Haldeman
discussing how to avoid telling
the truth and still avoid a perjury
charge
"That's when I realized he
was right in the middle, he
said "I knew just how traumatic
that would be for the country
and I shuddered. For a moment,
I wished I'd never been asked to
take the job.”
Doctors had discovered in
February that Jaworski had
cancer of the pancreas, for
which he was given a series of
radiation treatments
Jaworski, born in Waco, Tex
as, in 1905, became the youn
gest lawyer ever licensed in the
state at the age of 20 In 1929.
he became a full partner in a
Houston law firm.

drug poisoning
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - A
woman hospitalized tor what
appeared to be a stroke may
have been poisoned by a
capsule of Anacin-3 that had
been laced with cyanide, state
officials said Thursday
Sue Bowen, 30, stopped
breathing Nov 26 and foamed
at the mouth after taking a
capsule from an Anacin-3 bottle
her husband had purchased a
day or two before
Doctors diagnosed a stroke,
according to a police report, but
Richard Bowen, 29, took the
capsules to his doctor, who
passed them on to the state
Department of Health for analy
sis
On Wednesday, the state
reported that at least one of the
capsules remaining in the bot
tle, and possibly two others, had
been laced with cyanide
The San Jose News said the
woman had been poisoned by
cyanide, but authorities said
they were not certain of this
"We have indications that her
symptoms resembled those of a
cyanide attack," said Joseph
McNamara, San Jose police
