hits hard times
The early season has not been the best of
times for the Oregon wrestlers
First, the Ducks lost a pair of dual meets
to Humboldt State and San Jose State
before they picked up a win against Stan
ford And last weekend, the Ducks finished
a disappointing 22nd in the 33-team Cae
sar's Palace Invitational in Las Vegas
"I definitely thought we could do better,''
said Duck coach Ron Finley But you have
to remember that this is just like an NCAA
meet There are a lot of good teams and a lot
of good individuals "
This year's Duck wrestlers have a youth
ful look about them Finley's starting lineup
at the Las Vegas meet included a number of
freshman
Basically, we have four guys on the team
that have past experience and are good,
sound wrestlers,'' Finley said "The rest of
the wrestlers are inexperienced ”
But Finley believes that the freshman
improve
"The freshman have to come along." said
a hopeful Finley "It will take some time, but
I believe they will come along as the season
progresses "
Duck veteran heavyweight Dan Cook
suffered a knee injury in the Oregon-Stan
ford dual meet a week ago and underwent
an arthorgram Monday His status will not
be known for a few days, and he'll be kept
out of Thursday's dual meet with Athletes In
Action
"Cook has possible cartilage damage,"
Finley said We ll know today if he does or
not
Finley expects a tough meet from the
Christian wrestlers, which will start at 7:30
p m at Mac Court AIA boasts a couple of
former All-American collegiate wrestlers.
First, there is Danny Cuestas, who wrestled
at 126-pounds for Cal-State Bakersfield, but
will go at 142 pounds for AIA Also Steve
Sutter is another All-American
They are the closest thing to a profes
sional wrestling team there is," Finley said
"It will be tough for us We have never beat
them and they have beaten some good
teams this year "
Virginia tops poll
after big blowouts
From Associated Press reports
Two more decisive victories over out-manned
opponents last week kept unbeaten Virginia on
top ot The Associated Press college basketball
poll announced Monday
The Cavaliers, who battered James Madison
51-34 and Virginia Military 86-41 last week,
received 49 first place ballots and totaled 1,149
points in the nationwide poll of sports writers and
broadcasters
That gave Virginia a comfortable 80-point
lead over Kentucky, which moved up a notch to
No 2 on the strength of victories over Notre
Dame, 58-45, and Villanova. 93-79
Kentucky's advance to No 2 dropped Geor
getown back to third place this week and upset a
long-anticipated confrontation between Virginia
and the Hoyas next Saturday night Had George
town maintained its position, that contest would
have matched the nation's top two teams.
Georgetown walloped Morgan State 91-57
and St Francis, Pa 75-40, but needed an over
time to edge past Western Kentucky, 70-66
Kentucky's victory over Villanova cost the Big
East school six spots in the standings, tumbling it
from fourth place to No 10 Moving into the No 4
slot this week is Memphis State, up one place
after beating St Louis 75-56 and Ball State 104-81
last week
UCLA also advanced one spot, from No 6 to
No 5, after a pair of close victories. The Bruins
edged DePaul 73-70 in overtime and nipped Notre
Dame 65-64
Indiana took over sixth place, moving up two
places with victories over Miami, 75-59, and Texas
El-Paso, 65-54 Iowa enjoyed the best advance of
any team, moving up three places from 10th to
seventh after beating Drake 68-63, Navy 76-65
and Hawaii 99-67
Missouri, up from ninth to eighth, Houston,
up from 11th to ninth, and Villanova complete the
top ten
The second ten is composed of Alabama, St.
John's, NY, Louisville, Tennessee, Arkansas,
Marquette, North Carolina, North Carolina State,
Nevada-Las Vegas and newcomer Purdue, which
earned the No 20 slot with an upset 69-63 victory
over Louisville and a 50-39 decision over Fresno
State
Dropping out of the poll this week was
Oregon State, which had been No. 19 before
beating Portland 55-44 and losing to Fresno State
