Oregon drug overdoses rise,
many from cocaine injections
PORTLAND (AP) - More
Oregonians are dying from
overdoses of antidepressant
prescription drugs and direct
injections of cocaine while
deaths from other drugs — legal
or otherwise — are declining, a
deputy state medical examiner
says
The last three or four years
there has been quite a striking
increase from overdoses Dr
Larry Lewman says about tricy
clic antidepressants
He says two common trlcy
c!*cs are amitriptylene, the gen
eric name for a drug sold most
commonly under the trade
name. Elavil, and doxepin, most
popularly sold under the name
Sinequan He describes them as
mood elevators" prescribed
for people suffering from de
pression
Lewman says Oregon's high
rate of tricyclic deaths may be
part ot a national trend He says
the drug is mentioned increas
ingly by the Drug Abuse Warn
ing Network, an organization
that gathers data from medical
examiners and coroners
On cocaine, Lewman says the
increase of an estimated 8-10
deaths from direct injections
over the past year has been
startling because such deaths
were extremely rare several
years ago
"That’s what's striking,"
Lewman said of the increase
"Four or five years ago we
wouldn't see any."
"Cocaine is a violent, potent
central nervous system
stimulant, particularly when in
jected directly into the blood
stream," he says "It s just an
extremely hazardous practice '
All but one cocaine death in
the past year was from injection,
he says
Lewman says tricyclic deaths
have replaced propoxyphene —
commonly sold under the trade
name Darvon — as the leading
drug killer in Oregon
Now it’s the No 1 cause of
drug overdoses in the state We
see them alone or in combina
tions with alcohol and other
drugs,” Lewman says of the
tricyclics "Many are suicides,
some are accidents, and some
times we can't tell "
He estimates that as many as
48 people have died from tricy
clic overdoses in Oregon over
the year, based on an estimate
of three or four such overdoses
a month
He says definite figures won't
be available for this year until
late summer or early fall of next
year
