Kennedy may nix 1984 race
WASHINGTON (AP) - Sen Edward Kennedy,
D-Mass , appears to have decided not to run for
president in 1984 and intends to make a formal
announcement on Wednesday, sources close to
the senator said late Tuesday night
Aides who asked not to be identified by name
said Kennedy intends to disclose his decision not
to run at a late-morning news conference
"He will make that announcement," said one
source
But this source cautioned that Kennedy had
been in meetings on the subject late Tuesday
night and there were 'still people who are trying
to talk him out of it."
Kennedy, who tried unsuccessfully to win the
1980 Democratic presidential nomination from
President Carter, has been the front-runner in the
polls for the 1984 nomination
But aides and other close associates have said
in recent weeks that some members of Kennedy’s
family have been urging him not to run
One associate of Kennedy said he made his
apparent decision at a family Thanksgiving
holiday
Kennedy arranged a meeting with House
Speaker Thomas O'Neill, D-Mass , a long-time
political ally, for Wednesday morning, apparently
to inform him of his decision.
The Boston Globe said in Wednesday editions
that political associates had told Kennedy that if
he ran, he had as good a chance as anybody of
winning the nomination if the economy continued
in a slump, but would have a poor chance of
winning the election
OLCC slams door on efforts
allowing drive-through sales
MILWAUKIE (AP) - The Oregon Liquor Control Com
mission unanimously rejected a request Tuesday to allow a
liquor outlet in east Multnomah County to experiment with
drive-through sales
The vote came after testimony from several opponents of
the proposal
Grant Lowery had asked that he be able to experiment
with drive-through sales. He said a survey of his customers
showed they favor the idea He also said other states had
successfully allowed drive-through liquor sales.
Carole Satterfield, representing Washington County's
Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, criticized the scheme
“Historically the state of Oregon has been willing to
spend millions and millions of dollars for alcohol treatment
and rehabilitation programs," she said. "What we have done
is look at the problem after the horse is out of the barn."
