Reprints big in ’82
Book publishers are a notor
iously wishy-washy lot. Even in
good times there are few who
take a chance on a new author,
a new idea or a new concept
In these poor economic times,
even fearless book publishers
have retrenched However,
many publishers are reprinting
successful books, some of
which are worth a good second
look either for yourself or as
gifts
A Gamut of Games, by Sid
Sackson (Pantheon Books,
$5 95) was first published in
1969 This second edition con
tains few new games, but the old
guys are swell These include
card games, checker board
games and games for pencil
and paper, dice or coins
The games run from very
simple to very tricky They may
be played by two people, or
many. They may be quick, or
quite time consuming with lots
of strategy All, however, are
inexpensive There are no mov
ing parts.
As part of the hype for the
movie ‘ Gandhi.” Avon has
brought out a new edition of
Freedom at Midnight, by Larry
Collins and Dominique
Lapierre Originally published in
1975, the book is a solid piece of
reporting India's independence
movement
Random House has collected
Four Films of Woody Allen
(paper, $9 95). The collection
includes "Annie Hall,” "Inter
iors," Manhattan," and "Star
dust Memories ” The book con
tains many stills from the
movies, but the scripts are just
that, scripts They are awkward
reading
However, for those of you
who delight in Woody's wry,
droll humor, they are elegant
reminders of what American film
can be
Perhaps the classic art rock
book has been reprinted by
Knopf (paper $19 95) Rock
Dreams, first published in 1974
with art by Guy Peellaert and
text by Nik Cohn, traces the
history of the medium from its
roots through the space rock of
David Bowie
Peellaert’s paintings look al
most like photographs, but they
are fanciful montages of the
famous, near famous and some
unknowns They cover early
heroes such as Little Richard or
Fats Domino, the whole Beatles
era and early punk yearnings
Scenes are also featured: the
clubs, the dances and the disc
jockeys
If you're serious about your
rock n’ roll. "Rock Dreams"
belongs on your shelf
Dell has brought out Thomas
Berger's Reinhart novels in high
quality Delta paperback editions
($8 95). For those unfamiliar
with Berger's dark wit, the
Reinhart books are a good
place to begin For those who
are familiar, it's nice to have
good quality copies
Mystery fans will applaud
Vintage (paper, $2 95) for
bringing back Dorothy Dun
nett's "Dolly" series, featuring
nearsighted painter/detective
Johnson Johnson
Each book is titled Dolly and
the Bird " Dolly is John
son's yacht, a clever vehicle to
allow Johnson to drop in neatly
on trouble The bird' is always
an intrepid young woman in a bit
of quirky trouble
It sounds a mite corny, except
that Dunnett writes each in the
first person voice of the bird
These humorous tales are a
cross between P G Wodehouse
and Agatha Christie They are
rarely dated
Along with reprints, the pub
lishers have brought out a
number of collections These
include quite a few cartoons
and newspaper magazine arti
cles
Pat Oliphant, whose editorial
cartoons appear regularly in the
Emerald, has a new book. Ban
This Book (Universal Press
Syndicate, paper, $6 95). It's
part of a large campaign to
make Oliphant the new darling
of campus humor
