Aretha Franklin
Aretha Franklin's latest
release. "Jump to It,” is a sur
prise, because most major rock
critics have been tripping over
themselves to drool over a truly
mediocre album While it
wouldn't be fair to compare
every album to her master
pieces. it would be fair to expect
that Franklin would at least try to
meet that standard
Not all the flaws are strictly
Aretha's fault Luther Van
Dross's supposedly brilliant
production fust clutters things
His extensive use of back
ground singers and every funk
cliche known to man is irritating
at best
These flaws quickly manifest
themselves on the title cut At
over six minutes, "Jump to It." is
just too long The instrumen
talists snap and pop without
much conviction, the repetitious
bass and gimmicky synthesizers
give the song an overly familiar
feel
Worst of all are the backup
singers Whenever Franklin revs
up her vocal cords and seems
ready to take off there are the
damned backups getting in her
way When Franklin does get
some space she either indulges
in cute little raps or mindless
scatting
The album's only truly great
song is I Wanna Make it Up to
You.” Pairing the Four Tops
lead singer Levi Stubs with
Franklin and using the rest of
the group as backup vocalists,
the song burns with conviction
The Four Tops show how pros
do backup work — always pre
sent. but never in the way With
Stubbs pushing her, Franklin
gives the album its only real
moment of magic
"Jump to It" doesn't show
Aretha at her best as
the label sticker on the album
proclaims Instead it serves as a
restricting format for her
considerable talents

Bad to the Bone
George Thorogood and
The Destroyers
George Thorogood is an artist
whose talents also serve as his
detractors best weapons A
gifted guitar player, Thorogood
is equally adept at playing either
the raw style of Elmore James or
the more fluid style of Chuck
Berry So his critics claim that
Thorogood is really nothing
more than a gifted imitator.
"Bad to the Bone,” his first
major label release on EMI, will
hopefully dispel that image
Of the ten songs on the al
bum, four are Thorogood
originals, the other six are
covers from sources as diverse
as The Isley Brothers and Bob
Dylan Thorogood's saving
grace is his ability to make the
covers sound like his own
songs
While the originals are none
too original, they all have that
raunchy sound that made the
early Stones so great The best
of the lot is "Bad to the Bone," a
swaggering ode to the kind of
man that every American boy
hopes to someday become
One of the more pleasant
surprises is Thorogood's sensi
tive handling of slower material
As the Years Go Passing By”
features Thorogood's prettiest
guitar playing to date
For the most part, "Bad to the
Bone” is tastefully done
good-time rock n’ roll. "No
Particular Place to Go," with its
hapless hero who can't unfas
ten his safety belt, loses nothing
over Chuck Berry’s version But
Thorogood's roots go back
farther than Chuck Berry, they
go all the way to John Lee
Hooker In fact, it is Hooker's
"New Boogie Chillun” that
gives Thorogood his best
moment.
