few albums the highlight ends
up being the best of the bad Not
so with Men at Work. “Be Good
Johnny" is the ever-popular
story of the persecuted young
dreamer Singer Colin Hay, who
is also the principal lyricist,
seems to be something of a
dreamer himself, which gives
the song a feeling of authentici

Men at Work is not a brilliant,
or even a great band They are
good and show signs of even
greater talents “Business as
Usual" has enough polish to
sound professional, but not
slick. Better yet, the members of
Men at Work are musicians who
know their limits and work with
in them.
Long After Dark
Tom Petty and
The Heartbreakers
Tom Petty and the Heart
breakers play classic rock n'
roll, with lots of muscular, sin
ewy guitars, an occasional or
gan swirl and a solid rhythm
section Through four albums
their basic approach has never
varied much
Their fifth album. "Long After
Dark," is more of the same, no
surprises and no disappoint
ments There is something
comforting in the knowledge
that after all the year's fads pass
there will always be a Tom Petty
album
"Long After Dark" shows The
Heartbreakers mellowing a bit

fire of their first album and the
magnificent “Damn the Tor
pedoes.” but this is made up by
their increasing presence as
musicians and Petty’s expand
ing talents as a vocalist and
writer
Side one kicks into gear with
“One Story Town," a song
sounding a lot like "Thunder
Road ' Petty makes every act of
defiance seem like a noble act
of huge proportion
“Finding Out," side one's last
song, ressurects the passion
that has made Petty's best
songs memorable It shows
evidence of Petty's growing
talent as a lyricist By stating
feelings in simple human terms,
Petty becomes at once more
honest and more profound
Side two doesn t deliver any
thing quite as powerful as
Finding Out" until the very last
song. A Wasted Life Once
again, Petty sings a song that
will touch those who ve seen a
person they love start to destroy
their chances Don't have a
wasted life I love you too
much, ’
"Long After Dark is not a
breakthrough album that will
gain Petty legions of new fans,
nor will it disappoint his loyal
fans It will consolidate his posi
tion as one of mainstream
rock's better performers
The Lords of the New Church
The Lords of the New Church
If an album ever deserved to
be heard it is "The Lords of the
New Church." The Lords bring
guts, commitment and style to
rock at a time when these quali
ties are desperately needed
At first listen, the Lords will be
regarded either as the new
standard bearers of punk or just
another no-talent bunch of
noisemakers The second view
comes from old-fashioned
reactionaries, those who feel
that rock has been all
regurgitation since Chuck
Berry's glory days Just ignore
them
On the other hand, it is not fair
to call these guys just punks
There is too much going on
musically to call The Lords punk
rock Sure, The Lords' an
tecedents are punk
Co-founders Stiv Bators (The
Dead Boys) and Brian James
(The Damned) were proto
punks, bassist Dave Tregunna
was with Sham 69 and drummer
Nicky Turner was a member of
the neo-psychedelic Bar
racudas
Neo-psychedelic is a term
that sounds fishy, but with The
Lords it makes sense A Ques
tion of Temperature," "Russian
Roulette' and Open Your
Eyes" recall The Jefferson Air
plane on dexedrine instead of
acid
Instead of the fuck you,
you're shit' attitude of a lot of
punk. The Lords don t indulge
in petty nihilism
Eat Your Heart Out is the
truest punk song and the most
explosive music since The Sex
Pistols' "Anarchy in the UK"
Stiv Bators' voice oozes scorn
James, Tregunna and Turner
kick up some of the most
propulsive music in recent
memory as the Lords attack the
petty rich
Where The Clash seem willing
to sacrifice their music for their
politics, The Lords avoid this
trap by making their point and

When you and a partner are wearing
TOUCHCONES. These soft biue piastic cones can
be held on the tips of your fingers or fastened to
your body with self-storing green laces. You
press-fit an orange Velcro cross hairs disk into one
cone and a three-color target disk into the other,
then try to bring them together as accurately as
possible, without looking. When the cones touch,
the disks stick together and remain in one cone or
the other, showing how close to center you were. It’s
great fun at parties and recommended for ages five
through adult.
