OSU's Randy Holmes fumbles after being hit by Oregon's Steve Baack (39) in Ducks 7-6 win
Ducks best at game’s end
By Paul Danzer
Of the Emerald
They saved their best tor last
Just when it appeared
Oregon State would come up
with it's first Civil War football
win in eight years, Oregon
quarterback Mike Jorgensen
found Osborne Thomas on a
26-yard scoring pass and the
Ducks escaped Parker Stadium
with a 7-6 Pac-10 triumph Sa
turday
‘The offense had a lot of
poise on that last drive to hang
in there," said Oregon coach
Rich Brooks, who stayed un
defeated as a player and a
coach in Civil War competition
"We had great pass protection
on most of those plays, and
Jorgensen had a lot of poise to
stand in there and throw the
ball ”
It hadn't been that way most
of the afternoon Despite start
ing with good field position
much of the time, Oregon failed
to make it count until Jorgensen
and Thomas connected on the
crossing pattern with 2:32 to go
in the game
It was the first time in Rich

Brooks' six years at Oregon that
the Ducks have come from
behind in the closing minutes of
a game to win, and as Brooks
said, it couldn't have come at a
better time
The one play that couldn't
have come at a better time came
courtesy of fifth-year senior
receiver Rourke Lowe, who like
senior fullback Terrance Jones,
saved his biggest day for his last
as a Duck
Lowe made a sliding catch of
a Jorgensen dying quail at the
Beaver 38 on a third-and-10
play to bring the Ducks back to
life It was a 21 -yard completion,
the 15th catch of Lowe's career,
and his longest reception.
"That's the biggest play of the
whole drive," recalled Jorgen
sen, "and he (Lowe) makes a
great catch on it "
"I knew I could get back to it
once I started towards it," said
Lowe, one of 20 seniors to wrap
up their Oregon careers Lowe's
catch came on a crossing pat
tern, and brought the Ducks
back from the grave with a new
vigor and a first down
The scoring play came with all
three Duck receivers in crossing
patterns against a OSU zone
defense The key to the play was
time, and with both backs stay
ing in to block, Jorgensen had
plenty That gave Thomas time
to waltz behind OSU corner
back Forrest Pellum who fell to
the turf as Thomas made the
catch
"A great feeling," said
Thomas of his catch, "I'm so
happy that we proved to every
one that we could come back in
the last three minutes. That just
goes to show you that this team
has faith in one another, we
believe in one another, we
proved it today ”
"It's sort of like a dream come
true right now," said Jorgensen
Jorgensen admitted that the
blitzing OSU defense, led by
linebacker James Murphy who
was voted the game's Most
Valuable Player after contribu
ting 19 tackles (16 unassisted),
caused a number of problems
for the Duck attack "But I knew
it had to fall sometime," he said
The Beavers tried to mount a
last-gasp charge, but senior
cornerback Steve Brown sealed
the verdict by picking off a de
flected Ed Singler pass with just
over a minute to go
Prior to the game. Brown was
singled out by OSU coach Joe
Avezzano as a key weapon in
the game In order to keep
Brown from beating them with a
long kick return, the Beavers
kicked high and short all after
noon, never allowing him to get
untracked
"It was very frustrating,"
Brown said of the Beavers kick
strategy But not as frustrating
as his interception was to Avez
zano and company
Jones' contribution was less
dramatic, but no less sig
nificant The 6-1, 220 pound
fullback rushed for 139 yards,
most of which came on trap
plays It was the first time in 22
games that an Oregon rusher
had gained over 100 yards
While none of the carries led
to Duck scores, Jones efforts
teamed with the leg of punter
Kevin Hicks to keep the Beavers
pinned with poor field position
much of the game
"It was either a feast or
famine thing," Brooks said of
the trap play "We had a lot of
big plays on it, but we were
never able to put a consistent
drive together to put the ball in
the end zone ” He paused, then
added, "Until it really counted "
