Attribute
A professional reporter
should attribute opinions to a
source so that they are easily
distinguished from facts Your
reporter. Shannon Kelly, in an
Nov 11 article on the women s
club soccer team did not do this
If Kelly had bothered to con
tact Manfred Tschan or me
about the article, as a profes
sional journalist would have,
she could have printed both
sides of the story and let the
reader decide
It is the Athletic Department's
policy not to allow a Club Sport,
over which it has no control, to
compete in Nationals and pos
sibly jeopardize other Varsity
sports This is a far cry from a
"ban" or secret agreement.
I would like to thank Athletic
Director Rick Bay for making an
exception to the policy last year
Thanks also to Sandy Vaughn of
Club Sports and Coach Tschan
for working so hard to get Bay to
take a chance on us.

The women's team should
look to its win-loss record to find
what is really keeping it home
Last year's team was one of
three undefeated teams in the
country going into Nationals
This year the Ducks have
racked up four losses
Coach Tschan and I kept no
secrets from team members
about our talks with Rick Bay
They knew everything we knew
Coach Tschan informed the in
coming coach, Tom Ebelew, of
Club Sports' relationship to the
Athletic Dept over six months
ago If team members didn’t
know of the policy, the "prob
lem of lack of communication"
seems to be among current
coach, captain and players, not
among past ones
While I'm tidying up details I
should mention that, although
the team did raise some money,
Club Sports paid for rental cars
and part hotel and food ex
penses, Nike supplied printed
warm-ups and travel bags, and
United Airlines helped with
travel arrangements (We
travelled by plane to the Nation
al Tournament in North Carolin
a, not by bus as the article said.)
Thanks again to all of them for
being part of our success

Oppression
One must question what type
of legitimization the U S
government uses in its
denunciation of martial law in
Poland and Soviet intervention
in Afghanistan It is true that
f— ■■■’■ '1 " —- ' " ■ .
these incidents are contrary to
the campaign for human rights;
however, the fact remains that
the U S government created
and supports oppressive
regimes in Latin America
The present regimes in Latin
America receive both financial
aid and military training from the
U S to maintain their reign of
terror as long as they comply
with U S interests Training was
provided by the Defense
Department and the CIA which
included methods in counterin
surgency, torture, and the iden
tification of communists (pea
sants who want to form unions
and develop organizations to
improve health and literacy).
The level of preoccupation
these regimes have against
communism is amazing The
U S military training instilled
this form of paranoia to legi
timize the oppression of the
masses Anyone who empath
izes with or aids the poor are
considered to be planning a
communist revolution.
The U S reasons for choos
ing to ignore the obvious viola
tion of human rights stems from
the tremendous investment that
U S. corporations have in Latin
America Oppression becomes
a means of creating an econ
omic climate that is favorable to
international investment.
It seems absurd that the Unit
ed States imposes sanctions
against the Soviet Union in
condemnation of their human
rights violations when the Unit
ed States maintains military dic
tators in Latin America to ac
commodate U S. corporations
