    Union of women’s groups
won’t help, directors say

Women in Transition and
Women's Referral and Re
source Service will be merged
into a single group if an ASUO
vice president's suggestion is
approved
The new group would add
administrative continuity for the
women’s groups, says David
Gibson, ASUO vice president of
administration and finance. The
new group could also do the
same activities with less money,
he says.
Since both groups have the
"same general goal of fighting
for women's goals, combining
them would strengthen their
front," says ASUO Pres C J.
Balfe

groups would not benefit
women, says a Women's Refer
ral co-director.
"It doesn’t show support for
women's groups on campus,"
Terri Dismuke says
If the groups merged they
would probably receive less
money than before and that
would hurt their effort, Dismuke
says Women in Transition is
specifically for older women
while Women's Referral
provides counseling and offers
job readiness activities, she
adds
But another co-director says
she will consider the advan
tages and disadvantages of the
proposed merger before mak
ing a decision
"At first, I was skeptical
because I couldn't see how it
would help our agency —
Women's Referral," Holly Hut
ton says She says she decided
to review the proposal
"because I have a history of
making rash judgments."
But until the merger decision
is made, the group is trying to
educate the public on coun
seling as related to women, Dis
muke says The Fall Seminar
beginning today will discuss
society's portrayals of women
and sex roles and how coun
seling can help overcome the
perceptions, she adds
The group also is planning a
racism workshop for winter
term, Dismuke says
I think it s important to make
the links between racism and
sexism," she says
The Reagan administration,
the defeat of the Equal Rights
Amendment and several
"turnarounds" in affirmative
action have caused a trend
toward increased racism and
sexism, Dismuke says
Women's Referral is trying to
make students more aware of its
presence and the services it
offers, she adds
The program will attempt to
overcome this awareness prob
lem by holding quarterly activi
ties, she says, A quarterly
seminar, newsletter and open
house are targeted to publicize
the group. Dismuke says
